A new action game for the PS5 has just been released, and it’s receiving mixed reviews within a beloved franchise.
What’s the latest PS5 game available now?
Carmageddon: Rogue Shift, the newest installment in the Carmageddon series, launched today. Originally debuting in 1997, Carmageddon is a franchise centered around vehicular combat. As the name suggests, these games primarily involve players racing against others while trying to wreck opponents’ cars as much as possible in various environments.
The latest release, Rogue Shift, introduces a roguelite twist to the classic vehicular combat gameplay. As the title indicates, Rogue Shift combines the chaos and adrenaline of the original Carmageddon games with the procedural generation and replayability features of roguelite mechanics.
On OpenCritic, a site that compiles reviews, the game hasn’t received an official score yet, but early feedback has been somewhat positive. Our sister site, ComingSoon, gave it an 8 out of 10, with Tyler Treese commenting that it “takes a few runs to really shift into gear, but once you’re using better vehicles and upgraded weapons, it becomes quite fun.”
GameSpew’s Richard Seagrave generally liked the game but pointed out some flaws. He scored it 7 out of 10, noting, “The core gameplay is fun, but Carmageddon: Rogue Shift is ultimately limited by its almost nonexistent variety in events.”
On the more critical side, Insider Gaming’s Michael Straw rated the game 5 out of 10, criticizing its controls and game modes. He mentioned, “Sometimes it works and can be enjoyable. Unfortunately, frustrating driving mechanics, responsiveness issues, unimpressive AI, and repetitive race types and boss battles hinder the experience, which may disappoint longtime fans.”
