Sony unexpectedly released God of War: Sons of Sparta for PS5 last week, catching players off guard. Although the game has generally received positive feedback, many fans were disappointed once they realized how the co-op mode is implemented.
The PS Store page for Sons of Sparta states that it offers a “Single Player or 2 Player Couch Co-Op mode,” leading many to believe they could team up immediately. However, the co-op feature is only available after completing the main story, which caused confusion and frustration among players.
The official game description mentions: “Join young Kratos and Deimos, sons of Sparta, on a Greek odyssey as they discover the meaning of duty and honor.” This wording suggests players can experience the game cooperatively from the start.
As pointed out by PushSquare, the fact that Santa Monica Studio had to clarify the co-op mode on Twitter indicates that the store listing was misleading. Many players felt misled by the description, expecting to play the game together from the beginning.
One user commented, “This game looks like a co-op side-scroller. The store description, the ads, and the ‘2 players’ label made me think I could experience the story with my partner. I feel cheated,” and expressed wanting a refund. Others shared similar sentiments, saying they bought the game specifically to play co-op with loved ones but felt deceived when they discovered the mode was locked behind story completion.
Several tweets echoed that disappointment, with players stating they avoided purchasing or felt disappointed after learning the co-op wasn’t available from the start. Many expressed frustration over the decision to lock co-op behind finishing the main campaign, arguing that it diminishes the appeal of couch co-op gaming—playing together through the story rather than unlocking modes afterward.
While post-game unlocks aren’t inherently problematic, the misleading store description—a detail that wasn’t kept a secret—has upset many. Clearer communication could have prevented the confusion and better managed expectations among the player community.
