It seems that EA has put Need for Speed on hold for now, as a trusted source claims the series has been “shelved.”
In 2008, EA helped launch the SpeedHunters website with its founder Rod Chong. This site celebrated car culture, which is the heart of the Need For Speed series. SpeedHunters was a spot for car enthusiasts to connect and see the latest in motorsports, racing, and everything car-related. Sadly, both SpeedHunters and Need For Speed seem to be facing issues.
Fans have noticed a lack of updates from SpeedHunters. Some even started a thread on Reddit titled “It Looks Like SpeedHunters is Dead” to share their concerns. Recently, a contributor to the website acknowledged that SpeedHunters is “on ice” and that Need For Speed has also been “shelved.”
“EA Shelved Need For Speed”
According to VGC, Matthew Everingham, a known SpeedHunters photojournalist, shared bad news on Instagram. His post stated, “Speedhunters is on ice. EA shelved Need For Speed, meaning no more funding for the site. I’m thankful for everything — the trips, the stories, the lifelong friends. I’m still shooting, just shifting to more video.”
While there are signs that SpeedHunters might stop publishing, EA hasn’t commented on the status of Need For Speed. However, they did mention that Criterion, the developers of Need For Speed Unbound, would be busy working on Battlefield until February 2025, meaning no new updates for the franchise until then.
No other contributors from SpeedHunters have spoken up about the situation. But given how quiet Need for Speed has been lately, it wouldn’t be surprising if EA decided to pause the project.
