Unlocking the Secret Cellar in Baldur’s Gate 3

If you explore the cellar beneath the Blighted Village in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll encounter a series of secret doors, including one that is protected by a chatty mirror. It’s essential to get past this mirror, as it guards access to the Necromancy of Thay and its treasures.

There are various approaches to bypass the mirror and uncover a companion named Shovel. Below are the steps to access the hidden area and collect your rewards.

How to Open the Secret Cellar Door

The cellar, located beneath the Apothecary in the Blighted Village, has a conspicuous hidden door behind a bookcase. To unlock this door, you need to push the crates next to the bookcase. Position your character near the crates, click and drag them aside. You’ll reveal a lever behind the crates—pull it to shift the bookcase and open the secret door!

Discovering What Lies Beyond

Once through the hidden door, you’ll enter a cave where you can find undead enemies resting in coffins. Engaging with the coffins will surprise you, giving the undead an advantage in combat. However, if you prefer to avoid conflict, you can simply refrain from interacting with them.

Advance through the cave until you come across a small wooden platform to the east and a large ornate mirror that doesn’t just reflect your image.

How to Get Past the Ornate Mirror

The Ornate Mirror will speak to you and is magically designed to grant passage to allies of its master. To persuade the mirror to let you pass, follow this dialogue sequence:

(Choose any non-aggressive response).
"Yes, I’m an ally of your master."
"Szass Tam is a vile creature."
"I read that a doctor used balsam ointment for wound care." (The exact dialogue here may vary depending on whether you’ve read a specific journal nearby).
(Respond with anything other than "I’d see the ones I love.")

Alternatively, you can skip this dialogue by succeeding in an Intimidation, Persuasion, or Strength check.

If you answer correctly, you’ll gain entry into Ilyn Toth’s laboratory. Failing to convince the mirror will trigger a construct to attack. Inside the lab, you can locate the Necromancy of Thay (but beware of a pressure plate trap just outside the cage it’s stored in).
