What is MTG Tarkir: Dragonstorm?
- The second Standard-legal set of 2025
- A return to the dragon-rich plane of Tarkir
- Inspiration drawn from the original Tarkir Block (2014-2015)
While officially the third release this year (thanks to MTG Innistrad Remastered, part of the Masters reprint series), Dragonstorm: Tarkir stands as the second Standard-legal set of 2025. The first was MTG Aetherdrift, and now we see a shift back to traditional Magic themes, styles, and narratives. Dragonstorm emphasizes a dramatic comeback to the dragon-filled landscape of Tarkir, making the storyline and the cards rich with dragons, clan conflicts, and, of course, even more dragons.
This main set features Play Boosters and Collector Boosters available for purchase individually, or as part of larger display boxes, bundles, or prerelease boxes. If MTG Bloomburrow was your initial exposure to Magic: The Gathering, you might be looking forward to a Starter Kit, but unfortunately, there isn’t one with this Tarkir release.
Tarkir: Dragonstorm has also been launched with five preconstructed decks optimized for the Commander format. Commander decks associated with a broader Standard-legal set typically mix cards from the main release with a selection exclusive to the Commander format, so expect that combination with Dragonstorm’s precons too.

Play boosters
At the heart of the MTG Tarkir: Dragonstorm set are the Play booster packs. These are available for individual purchase (although they may be harder to find online) and in large boxes with numerous cards.
Collector boosters
These packs cater to collectors and dedicated fans, mirroring the Play format by being sold individually or in larger boxes. Just keep in mind, they tend to be pricier.
Bundles and prerelease
If you’re looking to expand your collection without breaking the bank on booster boxes, bundle and prerelease options are a great choice. This time around, instead of just one prerelease box, there are five, each representing a faction from Tarkir.
MTG Tarkir: Dragonstorm mechanics
- The set puts the Storm in Dragonstorm
- Sarkhan Vol is keen to Behold a Dragon
- Each wedge of the MTG color wheel is represented
The card gallery for MTG Dragonstorm: Tarkir is still growing, but we have a glimpse of some of the creatures and spells that will launch alongside the set. It looks like it will feature a healthy blend of familiar mechanics paired with new additions, reflecting the playstyles of Tarkir’s five clans. Two standout mechanics are Storm and Behold.
- Storm – You might be familiar with the Storm Scale, where MTG Lead Mark Rosewater assesses the odds of a mechanic returning to Standard. The term likely sounds appealing, but Storm is a mechanic Rosewater considers highly unlikely to return. Storm generates a token copy of a spell for each spell cast before it on a turn, leading to some chaotic combinations, especially in spell-heavy decks. You can’t release a set named Dragonstorm without featuring Storm prominently. Therefore, early previews have already showcased several cards featuring this mechanic, with the most notable being the cleverly named Stormscale Scion.
- Behold – This new mechanic requires you to select a creature (either on the battlefield or revealed from your hand) and simply acknowledge its presence. While this may not seem impactful on its own, it introduces beneficial triggered abilities, like with Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant, whose entry effect enables you to behold a Dragon, granting a Treasure token if you do. And of course, this mechanic allows you to dramatically announce “BEHOLD, A DRAGON!” whenever a relevant card is played.
MTG Tarkir: Dragonstorm story
- Revisits the dragon-filled realm of Tarkir
- Dragons are tearing into multiversal Omenpaths
- Clans that represent the MTG colors rise against them
Tarkir remains one of the most adored settings in Magic: The Gathering, and its introduction a decade ago in the Tarkir Block has left a lasting influence on the game’s lore—especially regarding color identity concepts. The clans here embody the values associated with color combinations: The Abzan (WBG), The Jeskai (URW), The Sultai (BGU), The Mardu (RWB), and The Temur (GUR).
Interestingly, these clans draw inspiration from various historical and cultural groups across Asia, including the Persian Empire and Shaolin Monks, with a fantasy twist regarding their interactions with the dragons of Tarkir. The dragons emerged from a dragonstorm—manipulated by Ugin’s wings. When Ugin went into a forced hibernation (or was technically eliminated depending on the timeline), the dragon population surged uncontrollably. This led to powerful dragonlords subjugating the clans and humanoid inhabitants. A rebellion eventually toppled their reign, allowing the clans to rebuild, yet many dragons remain wild and dangerous.
As Dragonstorm: Tarkir unfolds, players confront the urgent threat posed by dragons disrupting the Omenpaths, the crucial portals connecting different planes within the Multiverse. While it’s unclear if the chaos inflicted by these dragons will extend to other realms or threaten the Omenpaths themselves, it’s evident that the five revived clans—led by the famous dragon enthusiast Sarkhan Vol and the recently awakened Ugin—will strive to avert disaster.
