As you journey through the Forbidden Lands in Monster Hunter Wilds, you’ll have the opportunity to take on various side quests for the residents of its numerous settlements. One such character is Samin, a researcher particularly interested in Endemic Life. At one point, Samin presents you with the first quest in his series, titled “Samin’s Research Report.” This task involves finding a Dapperwing in the Scarlet Forest. Once you complete it, along with a related research quest for Dareel, Samin will provide you with “Samin’s Research Report (Cont),” which is the second installment in his questline.
This quest follows a similar concept: you’ll be searching for a rare Endemic Life species known as the Rime Beetle, but this time in a different area of the Monster Hunter Wilds map. While the quest isn’t particularly challenging once you’ve located the Rime Beetle, pinpointing the right spot to search can be tricky. Here’s how you can find a Rime Beetle to finish Samin’s second quest in Monster Hunter Wilds, and an outline of the rewards so you can determine if it’s worth your time.
Rime Beetle Location
Where to Find Rime Beetles in Monster Hunter Wilds
Rime Beetles can only be found in the Iceshard Cliffs, which is the fourth region you access as you progress through the game’s story. The Iceshard Cliffs are populated with formidable monsters such as Jin Dahaad, and they have unique climate conditions that necessitate consuming Hot Drinks to avoid the detrimental effects of the severe cold.
In particular, you’ll find a high concentration of Rime Beetles in areas 2, 11, and 13 within the Iceshard Cliffs. Check the accompanying map screenshots for more precise locations. Keep in mind that Rime Beetles can shift their locations with the changing seasons; there tend to be more during Plenty rather than Fallow. Additionally, there may be a few other locations relevant during certain seasons, but 2, 11, and 13 are the most reliable spots.
Rime Beetles are often used to obtain Frostburst, a type of slinger ammo that inflicts significant ice damage when shot at monsters.
Rime Beetles are generally found near the ground since they do not fly. If you’re struggling to see them through the heavy snowfall, look for small snowballs that seem to roll along the ground. These snowballs are actually being transported by the Rime Beetles back to their nests for purposes that remain a mystery.
If you’re having difficulty locating Rime Beetles in the mentioned areas, you can use the Filter Icons feature on your map. While on the map, press right on the D-Pad twice, then press X/A to access a list of all resources available on the map. Scroll through until you locate the Rime Beetle and use left and right on your D-Pad to navigate to the different known locations.
Rime Beetles may occasionally despawn. I once rushed to area 2 to see several Rime Beetles wandering around to complete the quest. However, while I was capturing screenshots, the Rime Beetles vanished from my map, forcing me to shift to Area 11 instead.
How to Catch the Rime Beetle
Using Your Capture Net
Simply picking up a Rime Beetle with the Circle/B button won’t suffice for Samin’s requirements. You must use your slinger to capture it, and you have to equip the appropriate tool first. Open your toolbar by holding L1/LB, then use Square/X and Circle/B to scroll through the available tools until you find the Capture Net, and select it. Finally, use your slinger normally—L2/LT to aim, and R2/RT to fire. Once captured, bring the Rime Beetle back to Samin at the Windward Plains Base Camp to claim your rewards.
Rewards for Completing Samin’s Research Report
What’s in It for Me?
Return to Samin at the Windward Plains Base Camp—he can be found in the researchers’ tent right next to the squad counter. Speak with him to receive your reward for finding the Rime Beetle: 10 pieces of Mandragora and 5 pieces of Honey. Mandragora is essential for crafting Immunizers and Max Potions, some of the most effective healing items in the game, making the Mandragora very valuable. Honey is also crucial for upgrading your Potions to Mega Potions—though not as powerful as Max Potion, you can carry more of them at once.
While you can make a special trip to find Samin’s Rime Beetles, you might easily stumble upon them while exploring the Iceshard Cliffs. Just keep an eye out while adventuring in the world of Monster Hunter Wilds, and you’re likely to spot one of their distinct snowballs before long.
