In Dune Awakening, Sandworms are the most menacing creatures you’ll encounter. These colossal beasts can eliminate players instantly upon contact and are impossible to kill. They are faster, stronger, and tougher than any other living thing in the game. The best strategy to deal with these formidable titans of the sand is to utilize stealth and speed—stay out of sight and make a run for safety as soon as they spot you.
Given their significance in the game, we’ve compiled essential information on how to navigate and manage these creatures in the wild. Here’s a comprehensive set of tips for players facing Arrakis’ most dangerous foes.
Understanding Sandworms in Dune Awakening
Sandworms become active when players are traversing open sand. As you move, a vibration meter appears in the middle of your screen, indicating how much noise is attracting the worms. The more vibrations, the faster a Sandworm will arrive.
Creating vibrations for too long will cause a worm to burst through the sand nearby. The location is random—it might pop up over a thousand feet away or less than 300. Once it surfaces, it’ll head straight for you. The further away it is, the more time you’ll have to find safety among the rocks.
If a Sandworm catches up to you, it will consume you instantly. There’s no way to prevent this. Neither the best skills nor the sturdiest armor can save you from this instant death. Additionally, being devoured will erase your backpack (except the first time it happens, which serves as a tutorial for this). Thus, you’ll be unable to recover your lost items.
Tips for Handling Sandworms in Dune Awakening
If you find yourself frequently being consumed by the Sandworms, here are some strategies to help you manage them:
- Use rocky terrain as safe spots. When navigating the map, strive to move through rocky areas rather than crossing open sand directly to your target.
- Crouching reduces vibrations, while sprinting increases them. If you must spend time on the sand, opt for stealth. Although you can’t remain on the sand indefinitely, being discreet allows you to extend your time safely.
- Shields and similar devices attract Sandworms. These creatures are drawn to shields and levitation technology, even if you’re elevated. Deactivate these when moving across sandy areas.
- If you see a worm surface, seek rocky ground immediately! At this point, noise and vibrations no longer matter—it’s aware of your presence and coming for you! Use your fastest method to reach rocky terrain before it’s too late.
- Vehicles won’t outrun a Sandworm. While sandbikes offer a quicker way to travel, you’re still at risk. Just because it takes time for a Sandworm to catch up doesn’t mean it won’t catch you eventually.
- Avoid Drumsand! The red patches of sand make extra noise when walked on. Steer clear of these whenever possible!
- Explore options that could help. Certain items and gear can lessen your vibrations significantly, although they may be rare or situation-specific.
Watch out for crashed ships that might land in sandy regions. Retrieving items from them means risking an encounter with Sandworms, so approach cautiously and quietly. If you chose the Trooper during character creation, you can use the grapple hook to quickly reach those last few yards if necessary. For those who didn’t pick Trooper, you can learn the basics at the Dune Awakening Griffin’s Reach Tradepost.
