The latest Astraeos DLC for Ark: Survival Ascended introduces players to the Maeguana, a massive lizard that simplifies land travel. This cautious omnivore can join your extensive lineup of friendly reptiles, bringing unique features that set it apart from other creatures in the game.
The Maeguana boasts impressive land speed and the ability to glide, making it an adaptable option for both ground and aerial travel. This dinosaur behaves somewhat like a flying squirrel, leaping high off the ground and gliding across distances. Taming and riding a Maeguana allows you to traverse the landscape swiftly as you explore various locations.
Where to Locate a Maeguana
Explore Specific Biomes on Your Map
You can find Maeguanas primarily in the Grassland biomes scattered across your map, with a higher concentration around the Korinthos and Phokintos islands. Initially, these creatures may go unnoticed, as they often inhabit the southern, temperate regions that can be easily overlooked during your travels.
The southeastern area of Phokintos has the most Maeguana sightings, particularly near the Grasslands that touch the beaches along the coast. Similarly, many Maeguana can be found in the Grasslands at the southern end of Korinthos Island. These creatures usually appear near water sources but are not found in swampy biomes or areas with extreme temperatures.
When you encounter a Maeguana, avoid attacking it immediately. These reptiles are quite skittish and will quickly dash away if they sense danger, using their gliding ability to escape. To approach one without spooking it, try to act harmless as you enter its territory.
Best Methods to Tame a Maeguana
Trap or Injure the Creature Before Feeding It
Taming a Maeguana can be done in various ways, but some methods are simpler than others. While this dinosaur isn’t the hardest to tame, it’s challenging to catch. The Maeguana will flee as soon as it takes any damage, jumping and gliding away before you can calm it down.
Here are the two main approaches to tame a Maeguana:
- Knocking it out with attacks
- Trapping it with structures (such as Billboards, Pillars, Ceilings, etc.)
Knocking out a Maeguana is more difficult than trapping it, as it will run off at the first sign of injury. However, if you have a flying mount, tracking the Maeguana becomes easier since flying is significantly quicker than its gliding. Simply continue to attack until it is low on health and knocked out, then proceed to tame it.
Using arrows from ranged weapons is more effective for taming Maeguana, as you want to avoid inflicting fatal damage.
The trap box method is a popular taming strategy in Ark: Survival Ascended. First, build a structure around the Maeguana to prevent it from escaping. Although it can still hop out, use Rare Flowers or Giant Bee Honey to attract the Maeguana into your trap to start the taming process.
Once you successfully catch or incapacitate a Maeguana, feed it Prime Meat, Mutton, or Basic Kibble to begin the taming process. As an omnivore, Maeguanas will consume a variety of foods, but these specific items will expedite their taming.
Maeguanas are generally non-aggressive creatures, meaning they won’t attack you even if you use aggressive tactics to tame them. This mount is excellent for early exploration of the Astraeos map due to its remarkable speed and gliding capability, making it easier to navigate the new terrain. If you’re looking to explore all that the DLC region of Ark: Survival Ascended has to offer, capturing at least one Maeguana is highly recommended for seamless travel.
