Mastering Sylux: Essential Tips for Conquering Metroid Prime 4

Once you step into Chrono Tower, you’ll start the final part of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Be aware that from this point on, there will be many spoilers about the story.

When the game tells you you’re at the point of no return, it really means it. Make sure you’ve completed everything you want to do before launching the final attack on the tower.

Phase 1 – Elemental Sylux

When you reach the big open arena at the top of the tower, a cutscene will begin, and Sylux will appear to fight. However, this isn’t the regular Sylux — it’s a stronger, tentacled version, so prepare yourself.

In this first phase, Sylux doesn’t have many tricks yet:

  • He will bunch his tentacles together and slam them down at you. Dodge just before they hit. Sometimes he uses only one tentacle, but the move is the same.
  • He will whip tentacles around, signaling that you need to jump over them, similar to jump rope. Use double jumps to get enough height and clear them easily. Just do this right before the tentacles hit, not earlier, because the attack moves slow.

To hurt him, shoot the tips of his tentacles until they burst, then grab and rip them off with your grappling hook. Missiles work best because they lock onto the tentacles, making it easier to hit while you dodge his other attacks. Focus on one tentacle at a time and keep your distance from Sylux’s body when tearing them off to avoid damage.

After each tentacle is gone, Sylux becomes vulnerable. Take the chance to fire at him with all you’ve got to chip away at his health. Once he recovers, the fight continues to the next phase.

When Sylux gets back up, he will switch to using elemental tentacle arms, and his attacks will become much more aggressive. To get him back to his green base form, blast him enough to overload his systems. Watch out for these new moves:

  • His heads will shoot a powerful fire beam in a straight line. Stay far back or to the sides to avoid it.
  • His middle head will thrust forward quickly, sometimes grabbing you. If this happens, press the A button repeatedly to break free.
  • He will spit fire pools into the air that stay on the ground. Remember where they land and avoid those spots.

Your teammates in battle might get knocked out at least once during this phase, so keep an eye on them and heal when needed. Use heavy weapons to take him down faster.

Once he reverts back to his green form, he will gain a new attack: he’ll tilt himself to the side and prepare for a slicing tentacle strike. You can dodge this any way you want, but using the Morph Ball dash is very effective.

Keep attacking him when he’s vulnerable after tearing off his tentacles, and he’ll go down. Then, you move on to the next phase, which starts with a cutscene.

Tip: Don’t worry too much about Sylux’s health during this phase. You only need to bring his health down to about half. If it feels like you’re not doing enough damage, that’s okay — this phase can last around 10 minutes, so stay cautious and conserve your health.

Phase 2 – The Tunnel

This phase is more like a mini-game. From this point on, your teammates will leave the scene, as Sylux pushes Samus into a dimensional rift. Keep firing at Sylux nonstop — damage is the only way to advance.

During this tunnel fight, Sylux will attack with different moves:

  • He’ll create bright eyeball beams that are easy to dodge. Move in the opposite direction and even go past them if possible, since they cover a large area.
  • When he charges up, a powerful beam shot will be aimed at you. Dash quickly as soon as you see the animation or you’ll get hit.
  • He’ll spin two lines rapidly, making it seem impossible to dodge. Use psychic mode to lock onto him with a homing shot and weave through the beams for safety.

Once you deal enough damage, a cutscene will begin, and you’ll enter the final circular arena for the last battle.

Phase 3 – The Final Fight

In this last part, Sylux is almost always vulnerable, so keep blasting him. He’ll repeat a few basic moves:

  • He’ll hop and slam into the ground, generating a big shockwave. Jump late to avoid the blast.
  • He’ll transform into “Lockjaw,” a morph ball form, and charge, trying to hit you. Dodge by transforming into your morph ball and dashing away. Note that Sylux is invincible when glowing in this form, so focus on avoiding his strikes and firing missiles when he’s vulnerable.
  • He will hold his arm cannon and charge a massive, horizontal blast similar to classic fighting games. Dodge by double jumping over it, but be prepared for multiple shots firing in succession.

Tip: When transforming into the morph ball to counter Lockjaw, use this viewpoint to better see the arena and dodge attacks more easily.

The key move to watch for is Sylux’s mini black hole attack, indicated by a glowing green eye. When he starts charging it, switch to psychic visor mode and fire a homing shot. Dodge his incoming projectiles and hit him directly. Reducing his health to zero ends the fight.

Bonus: Sometimes, when Sylux is stunned or winded, ammo and health pickups will appear. Use your arm cannon’s charge to vacuum these up quickly.

And that’s it — you’ve defeated Sylux and finished Metroid Prime 4: Beyond! Enjoy the ending — you’ve earned it. There are no more forms or fights with Sylux after this.
