Megabonk is considered one of the top indie games developed by a single person in 2025. Since its launch, the developer, vedinad, has been working steadily on a free “Spooky Halloween” update. Although Halloween has already passed, vedinad decided to release the update just in time for Christmas.
This update adds new free content, including a fresh weapon, new items, and a new Graveyard map. Players will also face new bosses within the Graveyard crypts. The toughest boss so far in Megabonk, Spooky Steve, can be found here—defeating him is necessary to unlock the newest playable character, Roberto.
Where to Find Spooky Steve
Before fighting Spooky Steve, you need to unlock the Graveyard map. To do this, find and defeat the “undead boss” on Desert Tier 2 with Calcium. This involves interacting with four tombstones, defeating colorful ghosts, and eventually summoning Calcium’s dad, a mini-boss similar to the Stone Golems from the main game.
Once you unlock the Graveyard, each round starts differently, within crypts that are limited in time. You have just over a minute to escape the crypt before Spooky Steve automatically appears. He has an enormous health bar, so it’s best not to challenge him until your character is strong enough. To get ready, clear the entire Graveyard map, defeat all four mini-bosses, and level up your character using the guide below.
How to Defeat Spooky Steve
The key to beating Spooky Steve without getting killed instantly is avoiding damage. Use Aegis shields and freeze him with the Frostwalker effect and high Duration. Spooky Steve has 340 undecillion health—that’s 1 followed by 36 zeros—and hits for about 2 trillion damage each time. The best strategy involves triggering Dexecutioner’s “Execute” effect as often as possible, which requires a well-built character with specific items and abilities.
Best Build to Defeat Him
Your character should be Athena, Bandit, or Ninja. Use weapons like Aegis, Black Hole, Dexecutioner, and Frostwalker. Equip Tomes focused on Duration, Cooldown, Quantity, and Agility/XP. Items like Thunder Mitts, Za Warudo, Lightning Orb, Anvil, Ice Cube, and Boss Buster are essential. Upgrades should prioritize Size, Duration, Projectile Count, Attack Speed, and Elite Damage.
Only activate certain unlocked items to maximize your chances, including:
- Green: Turbo Socks, Battery, Forbidden Juice, Cursed Doll, Boss Buster, Key
- Blue: Brass Knuckles, Echo Shard
- Purple: Slutty Cannon, Grandma’s Secret Tonic, Bob (Dead), Demonic Soul
- Gold: Anvil, Lightning Orb, Soul Harvester, Joe’s Dagger
How to Play
Focus on triggering Dexecutioner’s execute effect repeatedly by using crowd control (CC) effects from Frostwalker, Black Hole, and Thunder Mitts. These help slow Spooky Steve and land heavy hits. Your goal is to get as many projectiles as possible, increasing your damage output and making you nearly untouchable with shields.
While exploring the Graveyard, interact with gravestones for bonus XP and increased difficulty, which helps with leveling and item drops. Be cautious with statues that boost or decrease stats—preferably those that lower your max health or health regeneration, since avoiding damage is key.
Extra time after each wave can be used to gather more XP and items by fighting hordes before heading into the next crypt to face Spooky Steve.
Rewards for Beating Spooky Steve
Successfully defeating Spooky Steve unlocks the new character, Roberto. To do this, gather specific items like Thunder Mitts, Lightning Orb, Ice Cube, and other powerful gear. It’s best to clear unnecessary items to increase the chances of finding high-quality gear. Using luck-based upgrades such as Clovers can also improve your odds.
Once prepared, fight Spooky Steve with confidence, keeping your shields up and utilizing Za Warudo to freeze him. With enough practice and the right build, you’ll have a good shot at defeating him. Keep in mind, he’s one of the most challenging bosses in Megabonk to date, but overcoming him is rewarding—the new character Roberto is worth the effort.
