The excitement around looter-shooter games continues with the new release, Borderlands 4. As you work to stop the Timekeeper and gather allies for the Crimson Resistance, one of the first tough challenges for most players is facing Idolator Sol, the game’s initial powerful boss. You’ll encounter Sol around six to seven hours into the main story, and he can be quite tricky for some players.
Borderlands 4 takes a more realistic approach to its story and characters, which makes Sol feel more intimidating both in the story and during the fight itself. I’ve had the chance to face him during a preview and several loot runs, so here’s everything you should know to beat Idolator Sol.
Boss Guide for Idolator Sol
What’s Coming: Lasers, Spears, & Much More
Idolator Sol has three health bars and becomes more aggressive as the fight goes on. He keeps summoning additional enemies to help him, but you can also shoot these helpers to activate a Second Wind and recover health if you’re playing alone. This fight also showcases Borderlands 4’s improved movement mechanics, including the new grapple hook feature.
Before he can take damage, Sol’s shield needs to be broken. To do that, wait for him to perform an attack where spears fall from the sky. Most spears will be red except for one green spear. Use your grapple hook to snatch the green spear and toss it at Sol to remove his shield.
Once the shield is down, you can attack him freely with your weapons. Since the game offers over a billion different guns with random drops, you have many options. Bouncing grenades work well because Sol is a large target, and the arena’s small size makes shotguns a good choice too.
How to Dodge Sol’s Attacks
Always stay on the move. Sol’s attacks fill the arena, and combined with enemy fire, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. When he fires a big laser beam, dash to either side and keep moving to avoid damage. Repeat the dashing to stay safe.
When his health gets lower, Sol will use a new move that splits the arena into sections and showers energy blasts that can quickly drain your shield. Pick the safe zone—indicated by a brighter segment—and stay there until the attack finishes. Then, move to the next safe spot and continue until he stops attacking.
In his final stage, Sol becomes even more aggressive, attacking more often. Watch your health, keep moving, and keep removing his shield with spears as it regenerates. If you do this, he’ll go down fairly quickly. When defeated, Sol drops valuable loot and his bolt, allowing you to march forward in Borderlands 4’s main story.
