Among the two games in the Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake, the second game, Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake, has the most new content and changes. One of the most confusing parts is where to find the Magic Key. Early in the game, you’ll see doors and chests that can only be opened with the Magic Key, but you won’t be able to open them right away.
If you’re like me and remember the Magic Key (which was called the Silver Key in older versions) being found in the Lake Cave, you might be confused when you realize it’s not there this time. In the older versions, getting the Silver Key was optional but very useful. In this remake, however, you’ll need the Magic Key to move the story forward.
Where to Find the Magic Key in Dragon Quest 2 HD-2D Remake
You get the Magic Key by progressing through the main story and helping the mermaids. After completing the underwater quest and saving the mermaids’ home, you’ll receive the Magic Key as a reward. It’s that simple.
What the Magic Key Does
Once you have the Magic Key, you can go back and open the doors and chests that have blue locks. Some of these are in towns and are easy to find again. Others are in dungeons and might require you to backtrack. The items you find can include new gear, scrolls, or sometimes just empty chests.
Even though there are many changes, the new location of the Magic Key can be confusing if you don’t know where to look. Don’t worry if you think you missed it. Just play through enough of the story until you rescue the mermaids to earn the Magic Key naturally. It’s not missable; you’ll get it by progressing through the game.
