In Pokémon Pokopia, there are many new NPC friends to discover. At the start, it’s usually pretty easy to coax them out of hiding and have them stay on your island permanently.
As you progress through the game, though, building habitats and gathering materials becomes more challenging. The Lapras habitat, in particular, can be tricky to set up. If you’re trying to attract Lapras, here’s what you need to know.
How to Find Lapras in Pokopia
Unlocking Another Area
First, you need to unlock a different area. When you start the game, you’re in the Withered Wastelands. After finishing the story quest involving rain and Slowbro, you can choose to go to either Bleak Beach or Rocky Ridges.
If you choose Bleak Beach, you’ll keep going until you find Piplup. Piplup wants to teach you how to swim and will ask for your help. To complete this quest and attract Lapras, you need to set up the Tropical Seaside habitat with specific requirements:
- One large palm tree
- Four hedges (any kind)
- Ocean water nearby
Finding Lapras will unlock the surfing ability, letting you explore the seas freely. But, making sure Lapras appears takes a bit of effort.
Why Isn’t Lapras Showing Up?
Sometimes, Lapras doesn’t show up in the habitat despite meeting the requirements. Here are some common reasons:
- The habitat might be built inside another habitat. Make sure to space them out — Lapras prefers its own space.
- The palm tree isn’t large enough. You might need to transplant a bigger palm tree or grow one using a Pokémon with a grow ability.
- The habitat isn’t close enough to the water. Place the habitat right on the shoreline.
To check the size of your palm tree, press the camera button (‘-‘), then press ‘Y’ to switch to object identification mode, and center your camera on the tree. It will tell you its actual size. This trick works anywhere in the game if you’re unsure about object details.
Tip: To see if multiple habitats are too close or mixed, press the right stick to preview the surrounding habitats.
Initially, habitats can be confusing, especially since some look similar. But by carefully inspecting each item in the habitat menu (press X to examine), you can steadily bring new Pokémon to your island every day.
Once you unlock the surf ability, the waters of Pokopia are open for exploration. You can freely travel around Bleak Beach and Palette Town, which have wide water areas perfect for adventure.
