The Last Light Inn in Baldur’s Gate 3 serves as a key location during Act 2. It’s a meeting place for important story elements, including main quests and Halsin’s personal journey. This inn is also free from the Shadow Curse, making it a safe spot to rest and recover in the game.
While you’re here, take the time to explore the inn fully. Gather as much information as possible before things start to turn dangerous. If you want to recruit the mighty bear-like character, wake up a sleeping NPC, or protect a vital ally, I’ve included step-by-step instructions below for these quests.
Protect Isobel at Last Light Inn
Soon after arriving at the inn, you’ll speak with Jaheira and head upstairs to Isobel’s room. Suddenly, Marcus, a Flaming Fist cultist, will attack. He plans to kidnap Isobel, who is a cleric of Selune, and take her to Moonrise Tower to see Ketheric Thorm.
You have a tough choice here. If you team up with Marcus, you avoid combat and gain quick access to Moonrise Tower, but this decision means Jaheira can never join your party. On the other hand, if you choose to protect Isobel, you’ll need to fight Marcus and his allies. The fight isn’t too difficult because the Harpers will come to help you. Use magic-heavy characters like Wyll and Gale or strong fighters like Karlach to make the battle easier.
If you side with Isobel, there’s a twist. Your dark side might inspire you to betray her if you follow your Urge, which is part of your character’s backstory. Giving in to this urge will destroy the inn’s protection shield and unleash an undead attack, leading to a fight against Jaheira, who will oppose you as a result.
Waking up Art Cullagh
To wake the sleeping man in the inn, you need to play a tune for him using a lute. This lute can be found on the corpse of Malus Thorm, the mad undead doctor, in the House of Healing. Malus is a dangerous enemy, but you can try to outwit him by having Astarion do the talking. If successful, Malus might order his zombies to fight each other, giving you a chance to kill him easily.
After defeating Malus, search his body for Art Cullagh’s lute. Return the lute to Art at the inn, which will wake him up. Once awake, Art will lead you to Halsin, who needs your help to go to reflect on Thaniel, a mysterious shadow-bound child. You’ll have to defend Halsin from waves of enemies during this journey, so bring your strongest magic allies.
Protecting Halsin and Ending the Shadow Curse
Halsin aims to enter the Shadowfell to recover Thaniel and lift the Shadow Curse. To do that, you must defend a portal for four turns against waves of shadowy enemies. Keep your distance from archers and focus on defeating ranged attackers quickly to stop the portal from breaking. Use area spells, acid vials, or fire attacks to damage groups of foes simultaneously. Shields like a Scroll of Wall of Stone can be very helpful; building a barrier around the portal can keep enemies out and prevent damage.
This battle is intense, especially on lower difficulty levels. Strategy and area damage are your best tools here. Once the four turns pass, Halsin returns with Thaniel, and the shadow enemies vanish, bringing you a step closer to ending the curse for good.
Next, you’ll need to reunite Thaniel with the corrupted part of his shadow-infested soul in a challenging battle. Using radiant damage spells and weapons is highly effective. Shadowheart’s Spirit Guardians spell can truly help protect your party. Bring Halsin along to persuade Thaniel to come back, and prepare for the final showdown against Ketheric Thorm at Moonrise Towers to finish your quest.
