Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 offers a variety of engaging side quests. To access some of them, you’ll need to meet specific criteria and take certain steps beforehand. One of these quests is called Ars Dimicatoria, which you can initiate by speaking with Master Menhard.
This quest won’t show up on your map right away. First, you need to chat with the innkeeper in the city of Kuttenberg and inquire about any news. Once you do that, a new side quest will appear on your map. Here’s a straightforward guide to completing it.
How to Start the Ars Dimicatoria Quest
To kick off Ars Dimicatoria, head to the tavern located northwest of Kuttenberg City and talk to the innkeeper. When you ask him about any updates, he will mention Master Menhard. A quest icon will then pop up to the east, so make your way there and speak with Menhard.
Accept his challenge to a duel and defeat him. During the fight, some men will interrupt the duel, requiring you to calm the situation with a skill check. Don’t worry if you fail this check; the quest will continue no matter what.
Even if Menhard gets kicked out of town, it won’t affect the quest, so make sure to have a conversation with him.
How to Steal the Kuttenberg Brotherhood’s Sword
After speaking with Menhard, he will ask you to steal the Kuttenberg brotherhood’s sword. This part is the trickiest, as the gates leading to the sword are both locked with either hard or very hard lockpick difficulties.
To improve your chances of stealing the sword at night, consider consuming a strong quickfinger potion. It makes picking very hard locks much easier and can be purchased from an apothecary in Kuttenberg City.
Alternatively, you can access the building through the back door, which usually has a hard lock. However, at noon, it is often left unlocked. Enter through that door, head to the second floor, make a U-turn, and open the door to your right. The sword is displayed on the wall at the east end of the table, so go ahead and grab it. Once you’ve got it, follow the coordinates on your map and interact with the wall to place the sword down.
If you’re caught while stealing the sword, your opponents will gain an advantage in upcoming duels. You and your allies won’t be able to wear armor during these fights, making it a risky challenge.
Now, return to Menhard. After this, you will fast-travel to the town hall with him. Agree to assist him in the duels and to become part of the swordfighting brotherhood. If you haven’t defeated Menhard yet, you will need to do this and then take an oath to join.
Once that’s completed, wait 24 hours and inform him that you’re prepared for the duels. If he tells you to hang on, wait another 24 hours and speak to him again.
While we tried not to get caught during the theft, the opposition still blamed Henry. You might avoid this if you steal the sword at night when everyone is asleep.
How to Win the Duels
After a cutscene, the duels will begin. Menhard will fight first, so wait for your turn. When it’s your time to compete, head to the yellow corner. As soon as the combat begins, draw your sword and start fighting. Your initial opponents, Linhart and Emmeram, are not very challenging.
Menhard is a master swordsman, and you’re likely to pick up valuable techniques from him.
These two opponents are relatively weak, so defeat them quickly. If you find yourself struggling, focus on parrying and using combos. Utilize the Master Strike to inflict significant damage.
Be cautious of Master Nicolas, your next opponent. He’s skilled but not as intimidating as Henry when he’s motivated. Avoid striking him directly against his sword, as he can use Master Strike as well and utilize quick counters.
Your strategy should be primarily to parry and counterattack, but if you’re confident in your timing, feel free to go for Master Strikes. After overcoming him, wait for three days. You can either take on other tasks or skip time. Then, approach Menhard again, and the quest will conclude. He will reward you with his longsword and a permanent bed at the Swordfighting Hall. Once you finish the Ars Dimicatoria quest, you can immediately start the Kuttenberg Tournament quest.
