Volbaino: Your Guide to Defeating the Fourth Major Boss in The First Berserker: Khazan
Volbaino stands as the fourth significant challenge in The First Berserker: Khazan, presenting players with a tough battle if they’re unprepared. You’ll find him at the end of the Phraugh Village section, which features several pathways to explore, as well as a few elite foes to confront. While navigating through Phraugh Village is relatively straightforward, be cautious of any water areas since Khazan is unable to swim. Additionally, be mindful of treacherous holes in the ground that could lead to unintended falls!
After proceeding through the village, you’ll eventually encounter a bridge that leads to Volbaino’s battleground. Before facing him, ensure you unlock a handy shortcut by kicking a wagon down the hill. Although Volbaino is formidable, he’s not quite as difficult as the previous boss, the Viper. While Volbaino has two phases, he doesn’t transform like the Viper, and his second phase is comparatively easier. Knowing his attack patterns and mastering some strategies to counter his fire attacks will significantly increase your chances of victory.

How to Defeat Volbaino in The First Berserker: Khazan
Watch Out for Heavy Hammer Swings in Volbaino’s First Phase
In the first phase of the fight, Volbaino employs powerful swings with his massive hammer and spiked weapon. His attacks can be dodged fairly easily. You can choose between using the Brink Guard to absorb the hits or opt for the Brink Dodge to maneuver behind him for weak point damage. Personally, I prefer the spear for striking weak points, although any weapon can prove effective. Be prepared to adjust your tactics based on which weapon you select, but the key strategies to watch for remain the same.
Volbaino executes several unblockable attacks during this initial phase. For example, he will strike the ground with his spike like a gong, creating shockwaves that you can avoid by dodging through them or by running far enough away. When you notice a series of six consecutive attacks, brace yourself for an unblockable swing that requires dodging. Following this assault will leave him vulnerable, so take the opportunity to land some powerful hits. Additionally, he can perform charge attacks with an unblockable swing using his spike—keep your eyes on that weapon when he prepares to strike.
Move to the Second Level for Volbaino’s Next Phase
As Volbaino’s health drops to around fifty percent, he leaps up to the arena’s second level, launching a jump attack. This is a prime moment to throw a few javelins for added damage. Following his landing, he will start hammering his spike into the ground and struggle to dislodge it, dealing damage in the process.
At this point, it’s best to climb to the second floor promptly; he will eventually lick his spike, igniting the entire lower level. Make sure you have the Necklace of Sealed Fire, obtained earlier in the game, as well as any fire-resistant rings you’ve collected.
Using the second level gives you the strategic advantage of easily escaping to the lower floor when he sets it ablaze, thereby avoiding fire damage. Keep in mind that the same moves will follow regardless of the level you’re on, so don’t be alarmed if he chooses to ignite the lower level instead. During this phase, he can create multiple fire zones on the ground, and space becomes a bit tighter on the upper level.
Utilize Water Enhancer for More Damage
At this stage, openings should become more frequent, allowing you to deplete his stamina and health effectively. Just be cautious—he won’t go down without a fight. Volbaino is particularly susceptible to the Water Enhancer, which can significantly amplify your damage output if you’re struggling. This item coats your weapon in water, providing an extra boost alongside your regular attacks. Bring along Fire Resistance Elixirs, and Fire Cleanse Potions will also prove invaluable.
Rewards for Defeating Volbaino
The Fallen Guardian Set: Enhancing Fire Effects for Khazan
Upon defeating Volbaino, you’ll be rewarded with 5,228 gold, Lacrima, two pieces from the Fallen Guardian Set, the Guardian’s Hooves material, and a selection of random weapons and accessories. The Fallen Guardian Set is fire-centric, delivering increased damage with fire attacks when you equip two pieces, and rewarding fire attributes upon successfully executing a Brink Guard with all four pieces. This makes it one of the top gear sets in the game since you’ll likely connect with it after battling tough foes like the Viper or The First Berserker: Khazan’s Blade Phantom.
In conclusion, Volbaino is an excellent representation of a challenging boss that can be overcome with persistence and strategy. Familiarizing yourself with his moves is crucial, as the ladder plays a vital role in avoiding fiery demise on either floor. Whether you choose a heavy weapon or a lighter one, don’t forget to employ brink guards and dodges to masterfully whittle down his stamina and secure your victory over Volbaino in The First Berserker: Khazan.
