Just like Fallout: New Vegas, Obsidian is once again asking players to make difficult decisions in The Outer Worlds 2. I had to pause the game a few times, especially because a choice early on really caught me off guard.
After completing a few initial quests, you’ll arrive on Paradise Island, which eventually leads you to the Vox Relay Command. That’s where you’ll face one of your first major decisions.
Warning: Spoilers for The Outer Worlds 2’s Paradise Island ahead.
Should You Choose Westport or Fairfield?
Most players tend to pick Westport.
Once you climb up to the main console at the Vox Relay, you’ll encounter a challenging boss: Brigadier Montelli. After defeating them, look on a desk for a hidden USB drive, insert it into the central console, and discover a secret room.
Inside, you’ll learn more about the villain, de Vries, but it’s also revealed that they’ve hidden a self-destruct sequence in the message. This means you’ve potentially sealed Fairfield’s fate, which will be destroyed without help. That’s where the big choice comes in.
You can leave Fairfield alone, letting the Vox Relay crash and destroy the settlement. Fairfield is an important town, home to many NPCs, and your first real town in the game, so it sticks in your mind.
Alternatively, you can interact with the console to send the relay to Westport, a different location east of Fairfield. The decision is yours, but in my game, I chose to save Fairfield and send the relay to Westport.
What Happens to Westport?
If you pick Westport, it will be damaged but still standing. The wreckage doesn’t affect Niles’ questline, so you can complete his companion quest there before leaving. Westport remains accessible, even after the relay’s crash.
No matter what choice you make in The Outer Worlds 2, bad things can happen. The key is to adapt and enjoy the story, no matter the outcome.
