Before starting Little Nightmares 3, your first step is choosing a character to play. Your options are Low, a young boy wandering the Spiral searching for a way home, and Alone, Low’s best friend and someone he can always rely on.
Each character has their own special abilities that come into play during the game. Your choice might even influence how you experience the ending. If you’re playing online co-op, each player picks a character. Playing solo? You can choose either Low or Alone, but once selected, you can’t switch characters without starting a new game.
What Are The Differences Between Low and Alone?
While both characters are useful at different points and have tasks unique to them, there are reasons to pick one over the other. Notably, each has a weapon tailored to them, which they use for solving puzzles and fighting enemies.
Both characters have various cosmetic costumes. You can set the outfits for Low and Alone at any time during the game, regardless of who you pick initially.
The main gameplay differences are shown in this comparison:
Image | Name | Weapon | Use in Puzzles | Use in Combat |
---|---|---|---|---|
Low | Bow & Arrow | Shoots buttons and frayed ropes, mainly from a distance | Long-range, making the toughest part of fighting enemies | |
![]() |
Alone | Heavy Wrench | Used to break walls and turn mechanisms | Melee weapon for close combat—delivers heavy blows at point-blank range |
Despite what you might think, Alone seems better suited for combat fans. Yet, it’s actually Low who often faces the most risk in fights because of the long-range bow, which requires precise shots from afar. Low usually acts first and takes more chances, sometimes remaining in danger even after completing his task. Alone’s role is more about finishing off enemies once they’re immobilized.
If you want more direct involvement in combat, Low is your best pick. If you prefer a calmer, less stressful experience and dislike close encounters, Alone could be better.
Direct contact with enemies typically leads to an instant restart, so Alone generally avoids initiating fights, handling the safer tasks.
Most puzzles can be completed by either character, but their specific puzzle sections feel evenly split. The key difference, aside from combat style, is the story itself.
Should You Play as Low or Alone in a Solo Playthrough?
Trailers suggest Low is more central to the story. From the opening scene, Low appears to be the main character, while Alone plays a supporting role. This doesn’t change gameplay but might influence how you see the story.
In terms of story focus, Low is often highlighted as the primary character. When playing alone, it feels natural to see Low as the main figure. Alone is more of a secondary character, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy playing as her. However, for a first time through, choosing Low might give you a clearer experience of the story. Later, you can try playing as Alone to gain a new perspective and deepen your understanding of their relationship.
If playing online co-op, you’re mostly limited to playing as Alone for one player, but in solo mode, Low is likely the ideal choice. Playing as Low initially helps you grasp the story, while returning to Alone on subsequent playthroughs allows you to appreciate her role more fully.
Ultimately, the decision depends on your playing style and what kind of experience you’re seeking. Use these factors to choose the character that will give you the most enjoyment.
