As you progress through the story in Death Stranding, you’ll notice holograms popping up all over the place and may find yourself curious about how to use them. You’ll encounter these holograms before you have the ability to create your own, so a little patience is required.

These holograms serve as rewards that can be attached to various structures you build, including bridges, delivery stations, generators, and more. You can even use them to play music.

This all ties back to the hologram customization feature that you get to explore later in the Eastern Region. Though it isn’t too far into the game, it might not be obvious right away, and the details about it are somewhat buried. So, let me clarify how the hologram system works in Death Stranding so you can dive into the experience.

To unlock holograms in Death Stranding, you just have to deliver cargo to the various stations scattered throughout the map. Some story-specific holograms will become available after completing main missions, but the majority are rewards from leveling up the game’s Preppers by completing deliveries. Keep grinding those stars until you get the hologram rewards, and if there’s a specific Prepper you want to obtain a hologram from, prioritize them!

Using Holograms in Death Stranding

After unlocking a hologram, you need to continue with the main story until Bridges provides Sam with the PCC. This tool is essential for constructing items like postboxes and bridges. The game will guide you through the creation of each new structure, but it may gloss over some finer points.

Once you’ve built a structure, you can level it up, and after reaching level two, you will have the option to customize it. Just hold the Options button when you’re in front of the structure to access the menu and add materials for upgrades, which will vary depending on the type of structure.

When you’re done, the structure menu should show a ‘Customize Structure’ prompt. Navigate through the menus until you find the customization screen, and you will see tabs for Music, Voice, Holograms, and Rare Holograms. Choose the hologram you want, confirm your selection, and the hologram should appear on your structure as you get close to it.

Adding Music to Structures in Death Stranding

Keep in mind that you can’t use both a hologram and music on the same structure, so you’ll need to decide which experience you’d rather offer to other players. Would you prefer to greet players with some tunes from Bring Me The Horizon or send them into a serious moment with a hologram of Guillermo Del Toro? The choice is yours.
