Mega Evolutions have been a topic of debate among Pokémon fans since they first appeared. Still, they sometimes let us see Pokémon in a new way. The game Pokémon Legends: Z-A brings back the Mega Evolution feature, showing familiar Pokémon in a fresh light.

One of the most iconic evolutions is Magikarp turning into Gyarados. Here’s how you can find your own Magikarp and eventually evolve it into a Mega Gyarados. You can easily catch a Magikarp early in the game.

Magikarp is a classic Pokémon for a reason. Finding one won’t take much effort. At the start of the game, finish the tutorials that get you to Rank Y in the Z-A Royale. After that, you can freely explore Lumiose City, visiting shops and wild zones.

Once you can move around freely, head over to Wild Zone 2. There, you’ll find plenty of Magikarps, and catching one is easy. Level it up from 1 to 20, and it will become a Gyarados. The next step is to Mega Evolve it into Mega Gyarados.

How to Find Gyaradosite for Mega Gyarados in Legends: Z-A

Gather the Gyaradosite Mega Evolution item.

After you catch Gyarados, you need to find and buy the Gyaradosite, which is used for Mega Evolution. This item is sold at Quasartico Inc, located in the northwest part of Lumiose City. It’s the large tower in the city, and the Mega Shard exchange desk is on the first floor. You’ll unlock this once you reach Rank F in the story.

Trigger the Mega Shard exchange and purchase the Gyaradosite for 240 shards. While there are other Pokémon-specific shards, focus on the one for Gyarados if that’s your priority. Be sure to collect Mega Shards whenever you’re in the city; they’re essential for Mega Evolutions. You’ll need many of them to eventually Mega Evolve your Pokémon.

Once you have everything you need, it’s time to hunt for shiny Pokémon and prepare for Mega Evolution. Follow these steps to get your own Mega Gyarados, and remember — there are many other Mega Pokémon to discover as well. Just make sure to gather Mega Shards whenever possible.
