While exploring Grounded 2, you might come across areas like the Ice Cream Cart, which pose a risk of cold damage resulting from a status effect called Chill. This effect causes a meter to fill at the top of your screen, eventually freezing your character in place and dealing damage. It’s possible to withstand this freezing, but it’s inconvenient to be stuck often, as you’ll need to heal or risk losing your progress.
To avoid this, you should focus on reducing Chill buildup. One effective way is by investing in the Chill Reduction perk, which slows down how quickly the Chill meter fills, letting you explore cold zones like the Ice Cream Cart or the cooler on the Picnic Table without freezing.
There are three main methods to gain Chill Reduction in Grounded 2:
The Smoothie Method
You can craft smoothies to fight the cold after learning the Blazin’ Brew recipe. These smoothies provide Chill Reduction, which delays Chill buildup, and Warm Up, which helps lower accumulated Chill. They also restore your health to full.
To make a Blazin’ Brew Smoothie, build a Smoothie Station and gather these ingredients:
- One Spicy Shard
- One Lingonberry Chunk
- One Apple Bit
Drink this smoothie promptly after entering a cold zone to get both the effects of Warm Up and Chill Reduction and make it last longer.
The Mutation Method
Another option is to consume Spicy Shards, which grants the Spicy Safety mutation. The mutation’s strength depends on how many shards you eat:
- One shard for Level 1
- Five shards for Level 2
- Ten shards for Level 3
It’s recommended to equip the Spicy Safety mutation in your exploration loadout, as it’s most useful only in specific locations and not worth active use everywhere.
The Armor Method
For a more passive approach, craft the Mitey Muffs — ear muffs that provide a small Chill Reduction. To make Mitey Muffs, use:
- Five Mite Fuzz
- Five Grub Hides
For better protection in extreme cold, you can wear a full set of Fuzzy Armor, which includes:
- Fuzzy Hat: made with three Bee Fuzz, two Gnat Fuzz, two Lingonberry Leather, and two Silk Ropes
- Fuzzy Parka: crafted with four Bee Fuzz, three Milkweed Tufts, four Lingonberry Leather, and three Silk Ropes
- Fuzzy Mukluks: made using three Bee Fuzz, two Bug Rubber, three Lingonberry Leather, and two Silk Ropes
All three methods are effective in providing the Chill Reduction needed to survive cold environments. Choosing the best method depends on your gameplay style and situation.
