Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles brings its deep and fun gameplay into modern times, making it accessible for both longtime fans and newcomers eager to dive back into the series, just like in 1998. However, new players may face some of the same challenges everyone else has experienced.
Even with new updates and improvements, this classic Tactical RPG still tests your strategic skills, throwing everything it has at you. For example, in the Lesalia Castle Postern mission, you need to defeat Zalmour, who hides among his infantry units and can be very dangerous if you slip up.
Lesalia Castle Postern Overview
This is the second main mission in the third chapter. Your goal is to fight Zalmour and his powerful units. Zalmour is a Celebrant who mainly uses Priest Magic to heal his allies or cause status effects, while the rest of his team consists of Knights and Monks, who excel in close-range combat. They’ll try to close in on you quickly, especially on the narrow walkway of the postern, with Knights unleashing strong attacks and Monks using their special skills to finish the fight. Using ranged attacks is the best way to complete this battle quickly and without too much trouble.
Enemy List
- Zalmour (Objective/Celebrant)
- 3 Knights
- 2 Monks
The stage is small with six enemies, making things tight. Zalmour tends to stay near the back and can heal himself every time he moves using Lifefont, making him challenging to damage permanently.
Lesalia Castle Postern Recommended Formation
To beat this mission, a ranged strategy works best. Having a high-level Black Mage as your primary or secondary job is highly effective for burst damage on enemies or Zalmour himself. Ramza can be built as either a Knight or Monk depending on your leveled-up skills. Knights provide more protection, while Monks can attack at longer ranges and deal high damage.
Suggested Team Compositions
- Ramza (Knight or Monk) with Squire as secondary
- Alma (with a focus on Cleric or Support roles)
- Agrias (Holy Knight) supported by a Chemist
- An Archer paired with a Thief
- An Orator (with a White Mage) supporting the team
- A Summoner (paired with a Black Mage)
You can bring Mustadio instead of an Archer for their nearly unlimited range, but standing on the wall makes your party vulnerable to enemies coming from below.
How To Complete Lesalia Castle Postern
The main goal is to eliminate Zalmour, which ends the mission instantly once he’s defeated, regardless of other enemies still standing. You could rush in and attack him directly, but that’s easier said than done.
Initial Setup
Start with Ramza in his default position, and place your Summoner behind him, with Alma moving to the final tile. The rest of your team should be positioned to maximize movement and coverage. Be patient at this stage; wait out enemy movements by having your characters stand still and prepare for the next wave.
Progression Strategy
- Move Ramza into the right corner of the doorway, then end his turn using evasive actions.
- Position the Summoner in front of the doorway and wait.
- Alma and Agrias will follow suit, moving into strategic positions and waiting.
- For your ranged characters, like the Archer or Thief, position on the wall to take aim at Key targets, using abilities like Aim +3 or Aim +5 for better accuracy.
- Keep your characters in defensive stances, anticipating enemy moves and waiting for the right moment to strike.
As enemies move closer, expect Zalmour to stay secluded at the back, healing and waiting to see your moves. Certain units will scale the wall, and some may use powerful spells like Aurablast, which can deal massive damage or even KO characters if you’re not careful.
Combat Tips
- Use ranged magic attacks to weaken or damage enemies from afar.
- Charm or entrap Monks or Knights using skills like Steal Heart or Aim +7 to turn enemies into temporary allies.
- Keep your team healed by using items like Hi-Potions and spells such as Cura or Curaga.
- Prioritize taking out the most dangerous enemies first, like Zalmour and the Monks, to prevent late-game chaos.
- Be patient and wait for your chance to land decisive strikes, especially on Zalmour, before he can fully heal or reinforce his team.
Final Moments
In the last rotation, Zalmour will attempt to attack your units directly, aiming for high damage or healing himself. Focus on landing the final hits with Ramza and Agrias and hope your Charm tactics hold long enough to keep Monks fighting for you.
Rewards
Completing this mission will reward you with 13,000 Gold and Ether. These resources allow you to upgrade your gear, making your team stronger and better prepared for future battles. While the fight can be messy without the right setup, adapting your strategy and leveraging ranged magic will make victory much more achievable.
