Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles features some of the most memorable moments in the Strategy RPG genre, including tough battles, heartfelt story moments, and the iconic Final Fantasy music we all enjoy. While the epic fights are the most intense and drive the story, the smaller battles are also noteworthy.
Take the Beddha Sandwaste mission as an example. It’s a relatively straightforward quest with a unique twist that adds urgency. The narrative behind it is tense and emotional. The mission isn’t the hardest or most complex, but it’s still enjoyable and well-designed.
Beddha Sandwaste Overview
Beddha Sandwaste is the fifth mission in the fourth chapter of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. It happens right after the Outlying Church battle. Your goal is to defeat a single enemy unit, Barich, a Machinist known for using sneaky tactics to take down Ramza.
Before the fight begins, Barich releases Poison into the air, which poisons Ramza and his team, meaning they start the battle Poisoned. If you don’t cure or defeat him quickly, your chances of winning drop. Barich is also flanked by powerful allies, making him difficult to take down.
Enemy List
- Barich (Objective/Machinist)
- Two Archers
- Two Knights
- One Black Mage
The enemy team has strong ranged attacks with their Archers, a Black Mage capable of casting powerful spells, and Knights who can fight up close. Barich himself often overextends, giving you the chance to quickly KO him if you’re strategic.
Recommended Formation
For this fight, Ramza should be a Dragoon, while your team should include a Ninja, Bard, Agrias, and a White Mage (preferably instead of a Geomancer or a ranged unit like Mustadio or another Archer). A good formation involves lining up Ramza in the middle with the others to his right in a straight line, keeping it simple yet effective.
Team Composition
- Ramza as Dragoon with a Squire secondary
- Agrias as Holy Knight with Chemist support
- Ninja with Thief
- Bard with Black Mage
- White Mage with Black Mage support
Having a Bard and Agrias is vital, and since your goal is just to take down Barich, you can often ignore the other enemies initially. The arena’s layout is tricky, but focusing on damaging Barich once he overextends is key.
Opening Moves
Since Barich starts the fight by shooting your Bard, dealing significant damage early, your first move should be to move your Ninja into the open desert to the right and wait. Ramza should navigate to a small crevice and jump onto Barich for good damage. The Bard stays near the back corner, healing periodically with Life’s Anthem.
Your White Mage should cast Esuna on the Bard and move into the area to heal others. Agrias can position behind the Bard and use an X-Potion to restore her HP, readying her for her attack. Meanwhile, your team’s goal is to sustain and wait for the perfect opportunity to strike.
Enemy Moves
The enemy team’s weaker link is the Ninja, who draws a lot of enemy attention. Knights will wait and then use Wind Slash and Firaja spells on him, often KO’ing him when hit by Firaja. Archers will aim shots at Ramza and the White Mage, trying to weaken your team. Barich will focus on targeting your Bard repeatedly, trying to shut down your healing and support.
Your Follow-Up Strategy
Your next turns should aim to keep your team alive and position for a strong attack. If your Ninja is still alive, it’s best to move closer to the healer to set up a Raise for later. Ramza can jump again on Barich, moving closer to land a decisive blow.
The Bard should continue singing, and the White Mage should keep healing, casting Cura on injured units. Agrias can line up with Barich and unleash Divine Ruination for high damage.
Enemy Turn Tactics
Enemy units will continue to move forward, with Knights edging closer and casting Wind Slash, while Archers aim for your key units. Barich stays focused on your Bard, trying to KO them to stop the healing support.
Final Turns
Ramza should aim to land the attack with an 82% chance, positioning himself to the side or behind Barich for better odds. If successful, the mission is nearly won. If Ramza misses, Barich will attack and might KO Ramza unless someone heals him. Use your White Mage to raise fallen allies or to heal critical damage.
Agrias’s Hallowed Bolt or Divine Ruination will finish Barich if Ramza hits his attack. Otherwise, with luck, he’ll be close enough to finish off in the next rotation.
Final Rotation and Conclusion
If Ramza misses, the enemies will continue their assault, with a Knight’s Will-o’-the-Wisp, a Mage’s Fira, and Archers’ shots dealing significant damage. Ramza will get a final chance to attack Barich, with a good but not guaranteed chance to land the hit.
Defeating Barich and surviving the battle grants you substantial rewards—specifically, 24,700 Gil—which can be used to upgrade your team’s equipment or buy better items from shops.
Casting aside the enemies’ focus on your team and targeting Barich effectively will ultimately lead to victory, earning valuable loot and boosting your campaign progress.
