Every Borderlands game can be played solo, but the series is much more fun with friends. Each Vault Hunter has unique skills that complement those of others, making teamwork more rewarding than playing alone.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably eager to understand how multiplayer works so you can get the most out of the game. Multiplayer in Borderlands is very user-friendly, and this seamless experience continues in Borderlands 4. It’s built to be played with friends, but it also welcomes strangers via its integrated matchmaking system.
### How to Create a Party
On the main menu, you can invite friends directly by clicking the group button. This will show your friends list from platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam. If any of your friends are online—either on your console or through SHiFT—they will appear below your party, and you can invite them easily.
### Does Borderlands 4 Support Couch Co-Op?
Yes. If you’re on a console, you can play Borderlands 4 locally with split-screen co-op. Just connect multiple controllers and select the split-screen option. However, this feature isn’t available on PC.
### Is Borderlands 4 Cross-Platform?
Yes, Borderlands 4 supports cross-platform play. You need a SHiFT account to access this feature. You can sign up or log in through the game’s SHiFT menu, then search for friends using their SHiFT usernames across different platforms. Cross-platform play is enabled by default, but you can disable it anytime in the “Session Settings” by toggling “Personal Crossplay.” If everyone in your party has crossplay enabled, you can play together regardless of platform. If even one person turns it off, crossplay will be disabled.
### How to Matchmake
To find random players online, select the “Matchmaking” option from the main menu. You’ll see four categories:
– Campaign: Find players near your current mission progress.
– Ultimate Vault Hunter (UVH): Explore Kairos with UVH ranks active.
– Moxxi’s Big Encore Runs: Team up to defeat bosses for rare loot.
– Weekly Wildcard: Test your build against weekly missions.
You can add multiple categories to your queue before starting matchmaking.
### How to Adjust Matchmaking Settings
On the top left of the matchmaking menu, there’s a “Matchmaking Settings” tab. This allows you to customize your search—by default, it matches you to players in your local region, but you can change it to any region you prefer. You can also toggle cross-platform play from this menu.
### How to Change Voice Chat Settings
To modify voice chat options, go to the Network/Social tab in the options menu. Here, you can turn voice chat on or off, adjust volume levels, enable or disable push-to-talk, and select your input and output devices to suit your preferences.
