Getting through the main campaign of any Ninja Gaiden game can be tough, but true fans know the real challenges start after the credits roll. Ninja Gaiden 4 has plenty of hidden content and unlockables that players can access once they’ve finished Yakumo’s story. This includes additional content for those who feel Ryu didn’t get enough spotlight during the game.
How to Unlock Master Ninja Difficulty, Trials, and Chapter Replay
After completing all 19 chapters of Ninja Gaiden 4 for the first time, you’ll unlock bonus modes under “Challenge Mode.” The first of these is the Master Ninja difficulty, which is the game’s hardest challenge and will require a lot of practice to beat.
You can start a fresh game on Master Ninja difficulty, but finishing the game for the first time also unlocks Chapter Replay. This mode allows you to replay any chapter on any difficulty with all your gear and moves unlocked. If you prefer a true challenge, starting a new game on Master Ninja might be the way to go. However, Chapter Replay offers an easier way to practice and master difficult sections on the hardest level.
The last bonus you’ll unlock after completing Ninja Gaiden 4 is Trials Mode. Similar to the Tag Missions in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, in Trials Mode, you can take part in special combat challenges or fight bosses on any difficulty without having to finish a full level first.
Note: I cleared Ninja Gaiden 4 on Normal difficulty during my first run, but I believe these bonus modes are also available on Hero difficulty.
How to Play as Ryu in Every Chapter
The real reward with these unlockables is the ability to play as Ryu in all chapters. Both Chapter Replay and Trials Mode let you choose whether to play as Yakumo or Ryu, giving you the option to experience Ninja Gaiden 4 entirely as Ryu.
Playing as Ryu isn’t exactly the same as playing as Yakumo. Ryu isn’t made for most of the story scenes and dialogue, so many cutscenes are skipped when you choose him. Still, it’s a great way to spend more time as the Master Ninja. To do so, simply pick Ryu instead of Yakumo when you start Chapter Replay or Trials Mode for the first time.
