Mega Tyranitar in Pokémon Legends: Z-A can be a strong choice in battles, even with its weaknesses. However, obtaining it isn’t easy and involves completing some special tasks. The Mega Evolution of the Generation 2 pseudo-legendary Pokémon returns in the new Generation 9 game. Many players consider Mega Tyranitar one of the best Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A because of its powerful offensive stats and the variety of moves it can learn.
Getting Mega Tyranitar isn’t as difficult as acquiring some other Mega Pokémon like Mega Greninja, Mega Delphox, or Mega Chesnaught, which require going through different ranked battle seasons. Still, you’ll need to progress quite far in the story and know where to look to find a Larvitar or Tyranitar, for instance.
Where to Catch Tyranitar in Pokémon Legends: Z-A (Larvitar Location)
The first step to getting a Mega Tyranitar is to catch a Larvitar, which you can find in Wild Zone 15 in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. You can only access Wild Zone 15 after finishing Main Mission 19, which involves defeating Ivor. Larvitar isn’t as common in this area compared to other Pokémon.
To catch Larvitar, you need to complete Main Mission 26, which unlocks Side Mission 080: A Shocking Territorial Dispute. To reach Wild Zone 15, you’ll have to fight a Manectric and an Ampharos on Hibernal Avenue to unlock the Holovator. This device allows you to climb to the rooftops and cross over to the upper part of Wild Zone 15. Once there, you’ll see a few Larvitar—you can try to catch or defeat them to open the catch window. Alternatively, Larvitar can sometimes be found wandering on rooftops between Vert Sector 2 and Vert Sector 4, west of Wild Zone 2. They may also appear randomly as Alpha Pokémon in Legends: Z-A.
How to Get Tyranitarite in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Progressing through the main campaign will naturally lead to acquiring Tyranitarite, the Mega Stone needed for Mega Tyranitar. You’ll earn this item by defeating the Rogue Mega Tyranitar during Main Mission 33. After defeating it, you’ll receive the Mega Stone, which can then be given to your Tyranitar. You’ll also need to collect enough Mega Energy to Mega Evolve it.
The sooner you catch a Larvitar and start leveling it, the better. Larvitar evolves into Pupitar at level 30 and into Tyranitar at level 55. After finishing the campaign, there’s a chance to encounter an Alpha Tyranitar in Wild Zone 20, which can serve as your Mega Tyranitar in the game.
Getting this Pokémon requires patience, but once you have a Tyranitar and its Mega Stone, you’ll be well on your way to using a powerful Mega Tyranitar in your team.
