There are many interesting things to discover in the world of Hytale, and one of the most curious is the Essence of Life. The name alone sparks questions because it sounds mysterious. When you see an Essence of Life, it’s just a floating green object that glows in the dark, offering no immediate clues about what it is or does.
It’s not obvious what these green orbs are or how they function, but rest assured, they have their purposes. Here is a detailed explanation of what they are used for and how you can find more of them.
### How to Get Essence of Life
The easiest way to obtain Essence of Life is by harvesting crops. While exploring the game’s world, you’ll often come across fields of wheat, carrots, corn, pumpkins, potatoes, and various other crops growing in the ground.
When you approach these crops and press the harvest prompt, you’ll not only collect the resource but also gain some Essence of Life. Because these crops are common in most grassy areas, it’s quite simple to gather a large number of Essence of Life this way.
Since every world in Hytale is procedurally generated, there’s no specific map location guaranteed to have these crops, but wheat is usually easy to find.
Long-term, you can set up your own farm with lots of crops, providing a steady supply of Essence of Life.
Other ways to get Essence of Life include finding it in chests or occasionally from defeating mobs, but harvesting crops remains the most reliable method.
### How to Use Essence of Life
Essence of Life has several important uses within the game:
#### Used as Currency
Merchants in Hytale, called Rootling Merchants, will accept Essence of Life as a form of payment for their goods. These merchant creatures resemble cute trees. Their locations vary between game worlds, but one merchant is always found at the Forgotten Temple.
To reach the Forgotten Temple, head toward the large cross-shaped structure on your map, which shows as a portal on your compass. Once you arrive, go through the portal and walk down the stairs inside the temple. At the bottom, you’ll find a Golum guarding a portal. Defeat the Golum, then enter the portal to arrive at the temple.
Inside, you’ll see merchants on either side. The merchant on your left, with a tree sprouting from its head, is the Rootling Merchant. They often sell ingredients and recipes, and their stock can change regularly.
#### Used in Crafting
Essence of Life is also used in crafting. Although you won’t find it in many recipes at the standard Workbench, it’s crucial at the Farmer’s Workbench. To craft this, you need six tree trunks and 20 Plant Fibers.
The main recipes that require Essence of Life involve farming tools and items such as Feed Bags, Capture Crates, Chicken Coops, Fishing Traps, Fertilizer Bags, seed bags, saplings, and planters. Most of the items crafted at a Farming Workbench utilize Essence of Life, including the more advanced Greater Essence of Life, which appears in some specialized recipes.
