Team Ninja designed Nioh 3 to maintain the tough combat style of previous games, making summoning AI allies, called Acolytes, an effective way to make single-player missions easier.
Calling an Acolyte to fight alongside you costs some resources, but they are especially valuable during boss fights. This guide explains exactly how to summon an Acolyte and how the mechanic functions.
### How to Summon an Acolyte in Nioh 3
In Nioh 3, you can summon (or “Call”) an AI-controlled Acolyte to assist in battle by requesting help from a Benevolent Grave—marked by a glowing purple sword sticking out of the ground—in exchange for Ochoko Cups.
Each summoned Acolyte stays with you until either their Life bar drops to zero or their Battle Spoils gauge runs out after you defeat enough enemies.
In our experience, the first Benevolent Graves we found were located just south of the Shrine, outside the first boss fight with Yamagata Masakage. As you progress, you might find multiple Benevolent Graves available in the same area.
You can only have one Acolyte summoned at a time, but each grave provides a preview of the ally’s build and level, helping you decide which one to summon based on their effectiveness.
### Acolytes Help Make Boss Fights Easier
While Acolytes aren’t strong enough to defeat bosses or enemies alone, they serve an important role by drawing enemy attention away from you. Enemies and bosses will shift between fighting you, any co-op partners, and your Acolytes. When bosses like Jakotsu-baba target your Acolyte for a while, you gain an opportunity to recover your Ki, heal with Elixirs, or use buff items like Sacred Water.
Having an Acolyte nearby significantly eases tough boss battles. However, summoning higher-level Acolytes requires more Ochoko Cups, which you can obtain in two ways.
### How to Get Ochoko Cups
In Nioh 3, you earn Ochoko Cups by playing in co-op mode with other players or by challenging and defeating Revenants. Revenants are the spirits of fallen warriors or other players in online mode, which you can summon, battle, and kill for rewards. Defeating a Revenant has a good chance (often one to two) of dropping Ochoko Cups.
If you can’t find Bloody Graves or want to farm Cups quickly, turn on Online Mode at a Shrine. The game then syncs with other players’ kills, spawning more Bloody Graves for you to fight at.
### Best Location for Ochoko Cup Farming
A reliable early-game spot for farming Ochoko Cups is just east of the Forest of Souls Shrine in the southwest part of Warring States. In this area, you’ll find five Bloody Graves with Revenants guarding them, surrounding the Bloodedge Demon Grave—an optional and very tough boss representing the malice of defeated Revenants.
Defeating the Bloodedge Demon yields many rare loot drops, including equipment and rewards from nearby Bloody Graves, but it’s highly challenging, especially for lower-level players.
Fighting Revenants individually grants a high chance of dropping one to two Ochoko Cups each. By praying at the nearby Shrine to reset enemy spawns, you can farm five to 15 Ochoko Cups in about five to ten minutes, making it an efficient way to build your supply.
