Menace is a tough game. If you know what you’re doing, it’s manageable, but the early stages of building your team and figuring out your enemies can lead to many losses in both lives and time, as you’ll likely be reloading often.
One thing that can help a lot is finding new equipment, but good gear isn’t easy to find in Menace. That’s where the black market comes into play. Just make sure you have something valuable to trade first.
The Black Market is accessible anytime between missions. Here, you’ll find a wide range of items for trade, including weapons, armor, full vehicles, and mechs. However, it doesn’t use money. Instead, you trade goods of your own to get what you want. Each item has a value, and you need to match or surpass that value to complete a trade.
Every time you finish an operation, the Black Market’s stock updates. It stays the same during missions but refreshes after each full operation, giving you time to gather more items for trade. The available items aren’t always stable either—mech walkers are rare, while smaller vehicles are easier to find. Prices tend to be high, so you’ll have to offer a lot for little in return. It’s best to buy only what you need instead of stocking up on everything.
When it comes to trading, you have two options: your equipment or commodities. Your equipment is worth less than what you paid for it but can be useful if you no longer need it for your squads. Commodities exist solely for trading and include a wide variety of alien items. Sometimes, commodities are given as rewards after completing missions or secondary objectives, so check the mission details before heading out.
Currently, there are only two ways to get new gear: trade for it in the Black Market or randomly receive it after completing missions and operations. Enemy factions often drop gear like weapons and armor at the end of missions, even if you don’t plan to use them. After operations, you usually get to pick one out of three randomly offered items—most often weapons. Since these are random, you can’t plan exactly what you’ll get, making the Black Market your most reliable source for new equipment, especially if you have enough goods to trade.
To hire new squad leaders, you’ll need to buy their dossiers from the Black Market, then hire them from the menu. Each time you purchase a dossier for a specific leader, it becomes more expensive.
For squad members, you can acquire more passively through the Woo component on the Impetus after completing missions. However, if you lose many squad members during a mission, your numbers will remain small. In that case, you’ll need to hire more from the Black Market, but this is costly, and you only get five additional Squaddies at a time. So, it’s best to avoid getting hit and invest in a Med Way on the Impetus to save your downed squad members during rescues.
