Like previous games in the series, Borderlands 4 focuses on leveling up your character by collecting lots of loot. The best gear and rarest items usually come after reaching the highest level and defeating the toughest bosses. But before getting there, you can still build a powerful Vault Hunter by farming early on.
Even if you’re eager to leave Coastal Bonescape quickly and explore what Kairos has in store, it’s smart to spend some time improving your equipment first. Here’s how to do that efficiently.
Best Farming Spots in Coastal Bonescape
Usually, wandering around the starter area won’t yield great loot. You’ll fight plenty of creatures, but they rarely drop valuable items. To gear up faster, focus on attacking Ripper camps—they’re equipped with guns and give better rewards. Here are three key locations to farm early on:
Harper’s Hideaway
Located on the east side of Coastal Bonescape, this area is full of Rippers. Expect to face large groups and gather some rare drops, possibly even an epic if luck’s on your side. The camp is also the starting point for the “Meat Is Murder” quest and contains the first Evocarium—both are helpful for gaining experience points and upgrading your storage.
Stillshore
This small camp sits in the southwest corner of the map. It has fewer enemies than other main camps, but there are many chests, boosting your chances of finding higher-quality loot. After clearing Stillshore, head north to Sarrett’s Jetty, where you’ll find more Rippers and a unique Survivalist Cache you can open once—it contains more guns than regular chests.
Riptide Grotto
The top spot for farming gear in Coastal Bonescape is Riptide Grotto, the area Claptrap sends you to early in the game. It’s filled with Rippers and plenty of chests, plus you can use the Encore booth to respawn Splashzone and fight him again. This makes it an ideal location for farming powerful equipment.
Farming Splashzone
After your first victory over Splashzone, you can return to the area just before his lair. Near the ammo vending machine, there’s a Moxxi’s Encore booth where you can pay to revive the boss. Boss fights tend to drop better loot than regular enemies, so repeatedly fighting and resurrecting Splashzone is a smart way to gear up, as long as you have the money and want to keep farming.
Splashzone usually drops at least one epic weapon, and while rare, there’s a chance to get a legendary drop from him.
Be aware, Splashzone hits very hard with melee attacks. Stay in front of him and watch for his minions. It’s helpful to leave at least one Ripper alive so you can quickly get a second wind by eliminating it, especially if you’re playing solo.
Once defeated, just go back to the Encore booth to resurrect him and keep farming—repeat as needed to maximized your loot.
