When you reach the final chapter of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, the game’s world opens up, inviting you to explore beyond the main story. What’s initially a straightforward journey turns into a more open experience, and exploring now has its rewards.
One key reward is the opportunity to recruit new characters, including Beowulf and Reis. These strong units are available right at the start of the chapter and, if you play your moves carefully, can become some of the most powerful members of your team.
How to Recruit Beowulf and Reis
To get Beowulf, start in Chapter 4. After taking control of Ramza on the world map again, go to the Clockwork City of Goug to trigger a cutscene and begin a sidequest. After the scene, travel to Gollund, a mining town, and read the new rumor there. This will lead you to the Royal City of Lesalia, where you’ll meet Beowulf and have him join your party as a guest.
Important: If you refuse Beowulf during this scene, you won’t be able to recruit him later. Since he’s also a key character needed for other parts of the game, make sure to accept his offer.
This choice kicks off a series of four battles in Gollund’s mining area. When you’re prepared, go into these fights.
How to Win the Battles in Gollund
There are four battles in this sequence, and you can save your progress between them if needed. Most of these battles are straightforward, and having Beowulf with you is a big help thanks to his status abilities. Keep him well-equipped to maximize his effectiveness.
Battle Name | Enemies | Strategy |
---|---|---|
Colliery Floor | Chemist x5 | Face the Chemists quickly; they are fragile but deadly if they hit hard. Blocking or healing them early is wise. |
Colliery Slope | Thief x2, Chemist x1, Behemoth King x1, Behemoth x1 | The Chemist wields a powerful magic gun. Defeating it early is crucial; it can cause chaos if it attacks often. Focus on taking out the Behemoths next to prevent heavy damage, and deal with the Thieves if they steal important items. |
Colliery Ridge | Chemist x2, Blue Dragon x2, Pig x1 | Equip protection against ice—iceshields help against the dragons. Eliminate Chemists first to prevent healing the dragons, then focus on Blue Dragons. The Pig is a rare enemy and useful for Poach, so consider capturing it if possible. |
Colliery Shaft | Plague Horror x3, Ochu x2, Archaeodemon x1 | This is the final and toughest fight. The goal is to protect Reis, who’s fighting among enemies. Use movement-boosting skills and equipment like Fly or Teleport to reach her quickly. Focus on taking down the Archaeodemon first, as it causes massive damage, then handle the Ochus and Horrors. Keeping Reis healed is essential to succeed. |
Once you finish these battles, Beowulf and Reis will join your team.
- Beowulf is a strong fighter with improved Mystic skills and better gear options.
- Reis is a powerful monster unit, and she has her own sidequest later in the chapter, making her even more valuable.
