Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar may have a bit of story, but the main focus is on managing your farm. You start the game with an established farm, and animals are a big part of it. Unlike many other farming games, you can access the barn from the beginning.

However, you’ll need to wait a few days before getting your first barn animal and the opportunity to add more. Even after acquiring several animals, it’s important to keep certain things in mind to make your barn successful.

How to Get Barn Animals

As soon as you arrive in Zephyr Town, you can enter your house and then access the barn. To do this, go to the bottom right inside your house or the door on the right when outside. Inside the barn, you’ll see a green board on the top left that shows all your current animals.

Your first animal arrives after a couple of days when Ramon pops up at your doorstep early in the day. He provides a free chicken and shares basic livestock info. Following this, Ramon sets up shop in the town’s bazaar on the top left edge. To add more animals later, you’ll need to visit him there.

When you interact with Ramon at his stall, you’ll generally have two options: buying or breeding animals. Early in the game, buying new animals—especially adults—is usually best because it helps you start collecting products right away. Once you’ve bonded with an animal, you can consider breeding. Breeding animals keeps the bond in the offspring, which can be advantageous in the later stages of the game. When breeding, animals stay in the barn for a few days without producing items until their offspring are born.

How to Get Animal Food

After acquiring animals, you need to feed and care for them regularly. The game offers two main types of animal food: Fodder and Chicken Feed. You can make Chicken Feed from Fodder at the red windmill, in a 1-to-1 ratio, though it takes some time.

Your barn has two storage spaces: the left one for Chicken Feed and the right for Fodder. When animals stay inside, they consume one of these foods daily; if taken outside to graze, they eat grass and don’t require stored feed.

It’s not advisable to take animals outside during rainy or blizzard days. You will often receive Fodder via mail from completing tasks, and you can also purchase Fodder, Chicken Feed, or Fodder seeds from the town’s general store. Fodder crops take around three days to grow; harvest them on the third day to prevent your animals from consuming it too fast. The most efficient way to feed animals is taking them outside to graze, which doesn’t use any stored food.

How to Increase Barn Space

The initial barn offers four spots each for chickens, large animals, and pets (excluding horses). These spots can fill up quickly if you’re expanding your livestock early on.

To increase capacity, you need to build a second barn. The process involves two steps:

  1. Wait for Wilbur’s grazing area expansion upgrade, which clears space above your house.
  2. Talk to Garon to start building a second barn. It takes a few days, and once complete, you’ll gain six additional spots for chickens and large animals.

Unfortunately, animals cannot be moved between barns. To remove unwanted animals, talk to Kat at the bazaar.

Once the second barn is built, you’ll need to manage food separately for it. As the number of animals grows, so does their food consumption, making proper feeding more important.

How to Increase Bond with Animals

You can see an animal’s stats—Friendship, Happiness, Health, and the Barn they’re in—on their info board. Initially, animals might have full health, but their Happiness and Friendship are low. Raising these takes consistent effort and daily interaction, including:

  • Petting animals by getting close.
  • Brushing smaller animals like chickens and larger ones like sheep or cows.
  • Herding animals by ringing the bell—boosts occur when animals approach and show a heart.
  • Taking animals outside when possible.
  • Hand-feeding them.

Once you have more than four animals, these tasks can become tedious. Hiring pets makes this easier; cats herd chickens, while dogs herd other animals. Pets are obtained before the summer pet show and can be purchased from Ramon’s stall. As you train your pets, they can herd more animals, allowing you to automate part of the care process.

All Barn Animals and What They Produce

You can see each animal’s output on the info board. Here are the main types of animals and what they produce:

Animal Type Possible Items
Cow Milk, Milk+
Buffalo Buffalo Milk, Buffalo Milk+
Sheep Wool, Wool+
Suffolk Sheep Suffolk Wool, Suffolk Wool+
Alpaca Alpaca Wool, Alpaca Wool+
Brown Alpaca Brown Alpaca Wool, Brown Alpaca Wool+
Chicken Eggs, Eggs+
Silkie Chicken Silkie Eggs, Silkie Eggs+

Cows and chickens are preferred because they produce items daily, making them more efficient choices for steady income.
