Refugees are everywhere in Hell Is Us. With religious conflicts turning into a full-blown civil war, most people in Hadea have lost their homes and comfort. From towns occupied by enemies and cities under attack, to remote camps and families forced to leave loved ones behind, the situation is brutal.
In the Vyssa Hills, you’ll find a refugee camp where an elderly couple is especially upset about leaving their dog behind when they fled from Jova. They can’t go back, and they’ll never see their dog again. Luckily, returning to Jova isn’t difficult, so it’s best for you to head back there.
How to Start The Man’s Best Friend Good Deed
While meeting the dog Max for the first time at the Vyssa Hills camp, this isn’t where the good deed begins. If you learn about Max from the Vosh couple before, it’s just background info. You probably can’t do anything about it.
However, in Jova, you can find Max yourself. He’s tied to a post near a house with a fence, past the well that goes beneath the town. A Sabinian soldier is watching him, complaining about Palomists for leaving their dog behind. When you approach Max, you can choose to free him. But the soldier will insist the dog is hers now and won’t let you free him.
This is where the good deed starts—you just need to figure out how to free Max.
Finding the Dog’s Owners
Before freeing Max, it’s helpful to find his owners, Alban and Esther Vosh, since you’ll need to talk to them eventually. They’re in Vyssa Hills. From Vitalis’ grave, go up the hill by the timeloop, then continue along the path until you find a ladder. Climb it to reach a small camp with five people, including a baby.
There’s not much to do here except talk to Esther and Alban Vosh. They tell you Max is their dog, but you can’t say anything to them directly, and they don’t give you any hints on how to free Max. What’s next?
Note: You can help Atticus move the refugees from Vyssa Hills to Caddell Farm, but Alban and Esther Vosh will stay regardless. This gives you plenty of time to complete this good deed.
Free Max and Return His Collar
Freeing Max is pretty simple—it mostly involves timing. While the soldier is watching over Max, you can’t free him. You have to wait until after Act 1 ends, which happens at Lake Cynon. Once that’s done, the story opens up, and many events in the world change.
For example, Captain Vaas and many soldiers will leave for Patham Abbey to loot it and investigate Palomist secrets. With them gone, the soldier guarding Max also leaves. Now, you can approach Max, free him, and take his collar as proof.
Note: If you haven’t finished the Performance Of A Lifetime Good Deed yet, the musician may have already been killed by Captain Vaas.
After freeing Max, take his collar back to the Vosh camp in Vyssa Hills and give it to Alban Vosh. He’ll be happy to have his dog back and hopes Max finds safety away from Jova. Whether you see Max or the Vosh couple again remains a mystery, but at least you’ve completed this good deed.
Note: If you’ve already met Gildas, you can return to him for a reward for finishing The Man’s Best Friend Good Deed.
