While Kairos might seem like a chaotic, lawless land run by a tyrant in Borderlands 4, there are still some quiet spots where things are calmer. These areas aren’t completely free from violence, though. Harper’s Hideaway, for example, has recently been affected directly.
Not only have the Rippers discovered the hideout and turned it into a small war zone, but something else—possibly another brutal creature or person—has also come through. The barn has become a blood-soaked scene, with only one survivor left. It’s up to you and your fellow Vault Hunters to uncover what happened.
How to Start Meat Is Murder
This is one of the first side missions available. To begin, you need to find Harper’s Hideaway. It’s located on the southwestern edge of Kairos, just northwest of both The Headquarters of the Crimson Resistance and the Abandoned Post safehouse, which you unlock early in the game.
When you arrive at the farm, you’ll face several enemies scattered around, mainly Rippers and Splicers. There’s also a chance a tougher enemy, a Badass, will spawn. After defeating all the enemies, head to the largest barn. Follow the sound of voices to a small room in the bottom right corner of the barn and open the door to free Byron. Talking to him will prompt the start of the Meat Is Murder mission.
As Byron moves to the center of the barn, you’ll need to do some investigation. Four scenes will be highlighted for you to check: a blood tally on the wall near some bodies, a dead Wildhorn animal among the hay, Ripper bodies under a broken machine, and dismembered arms on a table near a large grinder.
Interact with the radio on the table to receive a disturbing message, then Harper’s body drops from the ceiling above the grinder. After a short scene, you’ll need to press the kill switch on a control panel in the room, but it won’t work. Exit the barn and go to the back where the coolant tank is. Before interacting with it, fight off some Rippers that will land nearby—they’re mostly Breakers, which tend to charge and do heavy melee damage. Once the Rippers are gone, you can safely interact with and destroy the coolant tank.
Use your Grapple to pull off each side of the tank’s door, then shoot or melee the highlighted coolant to destroy it. Head back inside and shoot just above Harper’s feet to make his body fall onto the grinder. Interact with the axe and the radio attached to him to complete the scene.
After talking to Byron, you’ll face more Rippers outside, mostly Breakers. Take them out, and Byron will tell you to find a tool shop.
How to Find the Cave Behind the Waterfall
The shop you need is on a hill directly east of Harper’s Hideaway, along the shoreline of a big lake in the area. Talk to Otis, who’s near the vending machines, and he will give you directions to your next destination: Plungeford.
Plungeford is a large fortress to the north, built along a cliff. As soon as you arrive, expect to fight several Rippers. When you reach the bridge leading inside, you’ll encounter at least one Badass enemy, along with Plinkers and Splicers. After clearing them out, follow the ramps up to the main area of Plungeford, where more enemies, including a Badass, will await. You’ll also see Pulpers and some Psychos among other foes.
You can find two Vault Symbols near Plungeford—one is in the lower rooms of the tallest building (which has a water wheel attached), and the other is on a rocky wall on the cliff above and east of the main area.
Finding the Cave Behind the Waterfall
When you clear out the area, cross the large bridge heading west. Instead of going upstairs, follow the bridge until you reach a doorway blocked by wooden planks. Break through with melee attacks, then go inside and watch a brief cutscene.
Kill Zeke, a crazed man inside the cave, then use the radio on the desk to receive another message. This completes the first mission in the Grim Reaper series.
As a reward, you’ll gain experience points, cash, and either an uncommon or epic weapon, plus some Eridium. You’ll also unlock the Tropic of Cairn Vault Hunter skin. Meat Is Murder will now be available to replay whenever you choose.
