Ampharos is a key member of the powerful Mega Evolution lineup in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This Pokémon was fortunate to receive a Mega Evolution when the mechanic first appeared in Kalos. While Ampharos is easier to find and evolve than Pokémon like Goodra, you’ll still need to locate its Mega Stone, known as Ampharosite.
Many Mega Stones can be bought at Quasartico or the Stone Emporium, but some, such as Ampharosite, can only be obtained by completing specific missions or defeating particular Pokémon. To add Mega Ampharos to your late-game team, be prepared to progress through most of the main story missions.
How to Find Mareep, Flaaffy, and Ampharos
You can catch Mareep and its evolutions in multiple Wild Zones across Lumiose City, making them common in the game. The options for acquiring these Pokémon depend on your current progress in the story and which area you have unlocked:
| Pokémon | Locations |
|---|---|
| Mareep | Wild Zone 1, Side Mission 17 (guaranteed shiny) |
| Flaaffy | (Details not specified) |
| Ampharos | (Details not specified) |
You can find a regular Alpha Ampharos on the map, which appears alongside at least one or two Flaaffy spawns. While approaching Flaaffy isn’t difficult, the Alpha Ampharos will attack on sight, so be ready to fight if it notices you in the Wild Zone.
If you’ve unlocked many Wild Zones and want to go straight for a wild Ampharos, travel directly to Wild Zone 16 for a good chance of encountering one.
How to Obtain the Ampharosite for Mega Evolution
To Mega Evolve Ampharos, you need the Ampharosite Mega Stone. You’ll need to complete up to Main Mission 23: A Rogue Mega Ampharos, which involves defeating this wild Pokémon and earning the Ampharosite as a reward. After completing this mission, you’ll be able to Mega Evolve your Ampharos at will.
Catching a shiny Alpha Ampharos and Mega Evolving it adds an incredible visual element, especially for fans of Mareep, as the Mega Pokémon will tower over your character. You can also find a static Alpha Ampharos in the wild along with Flaaffy spawns. The Alpha will attack if it spots you, so prepare for a fight when encountering it in Wild Zone.
