Getting Overqwil in Pokemon Legends: Z-A with the Mega Dimension DLC can be quite difficult if you’re not familiar with the process. It’s especially challenging to catch its pre-evolution, Hisuian Qwilfish. Similar to finding a Feebas to evolve into Milotic, certain conditions must be met for pokemon appearances and evolutions in this DLC. This quick guide will help you locate Hisuian Qwilfish and explain how to evolve it into Overqwil so you can add it to your Pokedex.
How to Get Overqwil
With the Mega Dimension DLC installed, Overqwil occasionally spawns in five-star Hyperspace Wild Zones that are Poison- or Dark-type. The simplest method to obtain the Pin Cluster Pokémon is by evolving a Hisuian Qwilfish, which happens after it uses the move Barb Barrage 20 times. To do this, first catch a Hisuian Qwilfish.
How to Find Hisuian Qwilfish
Hisuian Qwilfish is rarer than Overqwil, and catching one requires specific conditions. You can find them in three-star Hyperspace Wild Zones that are Poison or Dark type. To access these zones, you need to start the ‘Hyperspace Mission 08: Hyperspace Lumiose Survey No.4’ in the Mega Dimension DLC storyline. This unlocks after about five to seven hours of gameplay. Once you reach this point, check the map for Hyperspace Wild Zones matching those types and look for their distinctive silhouette—round with spikes covering the entire body. If you don’t see one with Hisuian Qwilfish, continue rerollings until it appears.
How to Get Qwilfish
The classic Water-type Qwilfish from Generation 2 is easier to find. It spawns in two-star Hyperspace Wild Zones with Water or Poison typing, which are more common than the Hisuian variant. These zones are also unlocked after starting the ‘Hyperspace Mission 08,’ and you can identify them similarly by their silhouette.
Making Hisuian Qwilfish Spawn
If Hisuian Qwilfish isn’t appearing, you can increase spawn chances by repeatedly re-rolling the Hyperspace Wild Zones. Rest at a nearby bench and check the map in subsequent days and nights, repeating this process until the Hisuian Qwilfish appears. The best spot to do this is near the Nouveau Cafe, east of Wild Zone 20 and southwest of Wild Zone 8, where you’ll find a conveniently placed bench. This process involves several attempts, as Hisuian Qwilfish is very rare—sometimes requiring over 200 re-rolls, which could take around six hours spread out over time.
How to Catch Hisuian Qwilfish
In the three-star Hyperspace Wild Zones, Hisuian Qwilfish spawns at levels 133 or 134. Being a Poison/Dark hybrid, it’s best to use Ground-type attacks, such as Garchomp with Earthquake, to quickly defeat and catch multiple specimens. Its catch rate isn’t high, so Ultra Balls are recommended, and Dusk Balls work well at night in Lumiose City. To improve your chances, have your Pokémon eat a three-star Donut to access these zones, as there are plenty of recipes available in the Mega Dimension. Once caught, it will appear at Level 23-24 in the main game.
How to Evolve Hisuian Qwilfish into Overqwil
After obtaining a Hisuian Qwilfish, you can evolve it into Overqwil by having it use Barb Barrage 20 times, either in battles or by attacking training dummies at the Justice Dojo. The dummies at the dojo can withstand unlimited damage, making it a convenient training spot. Located east of Wild Zone 20, near Wild Zone 8, the dojo has two stationary training dummies on either side’s entrance that you can attack repeatedly without destroying.
Your Hisuian Qwilfish will not know Barb Barrage until level 28, so make sure to level it up using Rare Candies or Exp. Candies to reach that level quickly. When it has used Barb Barrage 20 times (which usually takes about three to four minutes of real time), a bright evolution arrow will appear next to it, indicating that it can now evolve. Confirm the evolution, and your Hisuian Qwilfish will turn into Overqwil.
How to Easily Grind Barb Barrage
To faster unlock the evolution, continuously attack one of the training dummies at the Justice Dojo, timing Barb Barrage’s cooldowns to maximize usage. Using the dummy targets will save you time from hunting for trainers or new targets. Keep track of how many times you’ve used Barb Barrage—once it hits 20, the evolution is ready. Confirm the evolution to complete the process and add Overqwil to your collection.
