Gengar is an excellent Pokémon to add to your team if you’re feeling nostalgic for the Kanto region, especially if you’re aiming to revisit the classic era of Pokémon. Catching a Gastly early on is a smart move because it gives you plenty of time to train and evolve it into Gengar.
If you enjoyed choosing from the three Kanto starter Pokémon, Gastly will also remind you of the 1999 days with its impressive power. Here’s how to get a Gengar early in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Where to Find Gastly Spawns
You won’t find Gengar in the wild directly like some Pokémon such as Hawlucha. To get Gengar, you first need to catch a Gastly in Wild Zone Four.
Go to the northern part of Lumiose City once the Wild Zones are unlocked. In the cemetery area there, you’ll find many Gastly at levels nine and ten. Catch as many as you’d like. It’s best to find a Gastly with a Modest nature, which increases its Special Attack growth and decreases its Attack growth. This helps Gengar maximize its offensive potential with moves like Shadow Ball and Sludge Bomb.
How to Evolve Haunter into Gengar
Once you have a Gastly, you need to level it up to level 25 and evolve it into Haunter. After that, you’ll need to trade your Haunter with a friend to get your Gengar. You can ask your friend to delay the evolution so it happens during the trade, or just let it evolve and then trade it back to receive your Gengar.
Trading for Gengar
To trade, go to the northern section of Lumiose City after unlocking the Wild Zones. In the trading area, you can choose either local or online connection. The local option searches for nearby players, while online requires you to set an eight-digit code to connect with your friend over the internet. Share the code with your friend so they can join your trade lobby. After trading your Haunter, it will immediately evolve into Gengar. Remember to reconfigure its moveset once you have it.
Enjoy your Gengar and have fun training and battling with it!
