Finding and catching Abra in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is one of the tougher tasks in almost every Pokémon game, and this game is no different. Abra is easily frightened, so you only get one chance to catch it before it vanishes.
Fortunately, Abra is common in Lumiose, so if you don’t succeed at catching it the first couple of times, you can just move on to the next one. It also appears early in the Wild Zones, so you won’t have to wait long to start looking for it.
When you first unlock Wild Zones 1 through 5, you can explore them in any order. Once you’ve seen Pokémon in these zones at least once, you can see their icons on the map, which makes tracking them easier.
In Wild Zone 5, Abra can be found on the rooftops. You’ll need to take a ladder inside the zone to reach these areas. Catching Abra is tricky because if it’s startled, it immediately disappears. To guarantee a catch, you should try to be sneaky. Even if you hit it with a Poké Ball, you have to catch it on the first try; if you miss, it’ll vanish and you’ll miss your chance.
Using a more effective Poké Ball, like an Ultra Ball, can improve your chances of success. Since Abra appears early in the game and is low level, catching one on your first attempt in the Wild Zone is usually straightforward.
To evolve Abra into Kadabra, you just need to level it up to at least level 16. However, evolving Kadabra into Alakazam requires trading it with another player. Since trading wasn’t possible in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, the game provided an item to evolve trade-evolution Pokémon on your own, but that feature isn’t in Legends: Z-A anymore.
To get an Alakazam without trading, you’ll need to trade Kadabra with someone using the Link Play feature and have them trade it back to you. Alternatively, once you unlock all Wild Zones, you can find an Alpha Alakazam spawning randomly in Wild Zone 20—day or night—though it’s a rare spawn. You might need to refresh the area several times. Defeat and capture this Alakazam to add it to your Pokédex without trading.
You can also find Mega Alakazam by using Mega Stones. Once you reach Quasartico Inc. after hitting Rank F, you can trade Mega Shards for Mega Evolution Stones. The Alakazite Mega Stone is available right from the start and costs 360 Mega Shards, which are plentiful in the city, making it manageable to gather.
With the Alakazite, just give it to Alakazam and carry it into battles to Mega Evolve.
