There are many bosses in Nioh 3, and several will challenge even experienced players. While most of the toughest enemies are part of the main story, sometimes you’ll come across a world boss that shouldn’t be underestimated.
One of these is the Demon of Envy, found in an underground shrine in the Hachijo area. If you’re having trouble defeating this yokai, here’s everything you need to find and beat the Demon of Envy.
Where to Find the Demon of Envy
To encounter the Demon of Envy, head to the Heian map and go all the way south to the Hachijo region. From there, continue through the swamp until you reach the Enemy Base near the Anneibo Temple Shrine. Clear out the enemies at the base, then approach and activate the shrine. Next, turn right and climb the central wooden platform with stairs, then leap across the gap to the red awning. Run along the roof and knock over a bundle of logs to create a shortcut to the shrine. Finally, descend into the underground shrine to find the spawn point for the Demon of Envy. The boss fight will only start once you get close to the smoke plumes near the back, so prepare yourself before summoning her.
How to Defeat the Demon of Envy
The fight with the Demon of Envy is tough. She has tricky moves and can buff herself to increase damage, so it’s best to be at least level 85 with a well-built character before taking her on. Equipping armor or talismans that boost fire resistance is crucial, since she relies heavily on fire attacks along with her physical strikes. Her fire moves grow more intense as the fight progresses, so resisting or debuffing her fire attacks helps you stay alive.
At the start of the fight, avoid her grab attack—though it deals decent damage, it also temporarily boosts her damage. When you see smoke around her snakes, roll behind her if you’re close; she can’t turn quickly, so this is the perfect time to attack her. If you’re too far to roll, back away to maintain distance.
Another key move to watch for is her dive, where she leaps into the air and crashes down, creating a fiery explosion. Dodge right as she descends to avoid the impact window and then attack during her recovery.
She also has a straightforward burst attack where she lunges at you like a drill. Counter this move by switching forms just before she hits—this stuns her, giving you a good chance to attack. Always be ready to counter this attack for consistency.
She often slashes with her swords and then has her snakes attack right after with a quick swipe. Rolling behind her is an effective way to avoid these physical strikes and land hits during her vulnerable animations. Staying behind her is generally a safe tactic.
Her fire attacks include a move where strands of fire fan out from her body, spreading around the arena and exploding into flames. Avoid these and don’t get caught in the blast to minimize damage.
Dealing with the Dark Realm Phase
When you enter the Dark Realm, she will imbue many moves with fire—like dragging her sword along the ground, which leaves a trail of flames, and dive-bombs that create pools of fire around her. Watch for her fire burst when her snake heads start spewing flames in all directions; sprint away immediately to avoid damage. This is a good moment to buff yourself or cast magic since she won’t move during this attack.
When she comes back from the Dark Realm, she resumes her regular attacks. Stick to attacking from behind during her physical moves, and don’t go for long combos unless she’s on the ground and vulnerable—her quick recovery makes it tricky.
The Final Phase
Once her health drops below 50%, she pulls you into the Dark Realm for her deadliest stage. Columns of fire erupt nonstop from the ground, making it hard to land attacks. Use your Living Artifact during this period to deal damage and try to force her back into the normal world. When she leaves the Dark Realm, the fire columns will stop, so focus on getting her out of it to have a chance to strike.
Managing your fire resistance and controlling her most dangerous phases are key to winning this fight. Out of the Dark Realm, she’s more predictable, and most of her physical moves are avoidable if you stay behind her. Save your Living Artifact for her intense fire attacks, and victory will be within reach, earning you a cinematic and rewards.
