Pokemon Legends: Z-A may not feature the largest team roster for a Pokémon game, but it encourages players to grow a variety of teammates through optional side missions and objectives in the nightly Z-A Royale.
If you’re training many Pokémon, you might find yourself running out of EXP Candies quickly. Here’s a guide to some of the best locations to farm EXP at different points in the game, along with helpful tips for maximizing your gains.
Tips for Farming EXP
First, make sure to upgrade the Red Canari Plush as soon as possible. When fully upgraded, it boosts your Pokémon’s experience gain by 15%. To upgrade it, you’ll need 16 Colorful Screws, which can be found exploring scaffolding around the city.
Once you unlock Quasartico (around Rank V), you can trade Mega Shards for EXP Candy S. These candies provide small experience amounts, but they accumulate as you gather Mega Shards. If you’ve maxed out the Pink Canari Plush, you’ll earn even more Mega Shards.
While it becomes available after finishing the game, holding a Lucky Egg during battles doubles the experience your Pokémon earn from battle experience, although it doesn’t affect EXP gained from Candies.
Early Game EXP Farms
EXP is plentiful for your main team early on, but if you need more, there are ways to boost your grind. Since Quasartico and the Mega Shard exchange aren’t unlocked yet, your main option is to farm the Z-A Royale. Battle every trainer you encounter and keep under-leveled Pokémon in the back of your party. Sitting on a nearby bench to switch the clock to nighttime allows for continuous farming.
You can also grind EXP Candies by defeating Alpha Pokémon—larger, glowing red-eyed creatures that appear in various Wild Zones. These always drop some EXP Candies, and sometimes catching the Alpha Pokémon afterward can give your team extra experience.
Mid Game EXP Farms
Once you unlock the Mega Shard exchange at Quasartico, your options expand. Besides farming Alphas and participating in the Z-A Royale, focus on gathering Mega Shards to exchange for higher-value EXP Candies.
A good spot to farm Mega Shards is around Prism Tower in the city, where you can run around the outside to collect shards. They respawn roughly every 10 minutes. Rooftops and areas near Mega Evolved Pokémon are also prime locations for shard farming.
Late Game EXP Farms
After completing the main storyline, new top-tier EXP farming methods become available. Completing Side Mission 109 grants you the Lucky Egg, which significantly boosts experience gains.
The Mega Shard exchange at Quasartico also offers large and medium EXP Candies, providing much more experience than the small ones. The most efficient method remains participating in the Infinite Z-A Royale. Collect Challenge Tickets and battle in Reward Matches at Quasartico. Winning these matches yields rewards based on your win streak, including EXP Candies—up to large sizes for longer streaks.
Here’s how much EXP Candy you can earn per win:
| EXP Candy | Quantity | Win Streak |
|---|---|---|
| EXP Candy M | 10 | 1–10 |
| EXP Candy M | 15 | 11–20 |
| EXP Candy L | 6 | 21–40 |
| EXP Candy L | 7 | 41–60 |
| EXP Candy L | 8 | 61–80 |
| EXP Candy L | 9 | 81–100 |
| EXP Candy L | 10 | 101+ |
Important: Each victory in a Reward Match increases your total EXP Candies, making it a highly efficient way to level up. Be aware that losing resets your streak to zero, so bring your best team to maintain momentum.
You can still farm Alphas and battle trainers in the Z-A Royale whenever you want for additional experience, even after reaching the late game.
