Where Winds Meet features a wide variety of gameplay systems. Some are essential for creating your character’s perfect build, while others serve only specific moments and are rarely reused. Many fall somewhere in between.
Disguises are one such system. Despite the name, disguises are more like full skins that transform your character into someone else for a limited time. This change is more than just looks; it also has significant gameplay implications.
What Are Disguises?
Disguises completely change your character’s appearance, turning you into another person. This isn’t just visual; it grants you different abilities depending on the disguise. Each disguise has a specific purpose, such as allowing you to speak with certain NPCs, sneak past guards at protected locations, or make it easier to ask NPCs for items.
Note: When wearing a disguise, some actions are restricted. You can’t jump around or use Lightness skills as normal, which adds a layer of strategy.
Disguises are temporary and cost Commerce Coins to equip. These coins are harder to find than regular currency, so it’s best to use disguises only when you’re confident they’ll help you reach your goal.
How to Unlock New Disguises
Disguises aren’t just handed to you—you need to create them yourself. This involves sketching a portrait of the character you want to disguise as. You can do this for every character by interacting with Rattan Paper in your inventory, but characters with unique disguises will prompt you to sketch them directly.
To create a sketch, hover your cursor over the character; their name and the difficulty of creating the disguise will appear. Press a button to take the sketch, then submit it at any disguise shop.
Important: If the character you’re disguised as sees you, they will call the guards and arrest you.
You’ll need Rattan Paper to make portraits, which can be purchased from Wood Craftsmen—one is located just south of the Kaifeng City disguise shop. After completing the “Veil of Love” quest and unlocking the disguise system, more disguise opportunities will appear on your world map marked with a mask icon.
Makeup Levels
When sketching characters, you’ll notice each has a difficulty level. This reflects how challenging it is to create the disguise at the shop and is tied to your Makeup Level. Each new disguise you unlock grants experience towards your next Makeup level. When your level increases, you can equip disguises of that level or lower, so a level 3 makeup allows you to wear disguises up to level 3.
Since disguises are rare, the best way to increase your Makeup level is by taking on commissions from the disguise shop. These missions involve collecting new disguises and completing tasks in them, providing fun stories and boosting your skills.
Where to Equip Disguises
There are only two disguise shops in the game—both located in Kaifeng. The first shop is in the southeastern part of the city, near the Fair Grounds. The second is beneath Kaifeng City, inside the Ghostlight Market. There’s a whole Lost Chapter quest related to reaching this shop, and its hours of operation are limited. Both shops share your Makeup Level, so you can choose whichever is most convenient.
Summary
Disguises are crafted rather than simply given. You need to sketch the characters yourself by interacting with NPCs and using in-game tools. The process involves hovering over the target, noting their name and disguise difficulty, and then taking a portrait sketch. These sketches can be submitted to disguise shops in exchange for disguises, which last for a limited time and require Commerce Coins to activate.
There are two main disguise shops in Kaifeng, with the entire disguise creation system accessible in both locations, allowing for flexibility as you progress through the game.
