While exploring the dark, empty hallways of GATE at night in Abiotic Factor, you may notice strange glowing orbs in the distance. These aren’t enemies or threats, and you can’t attack them. Their brief glow can help you find your way if you don’t have a flashlight nearby.
However, these small glowing orbs serve more purposes than just providing light. If you manage to collect one, it can be useful in your garden when combined with other organic ingredients. Some of the remaining survivors in GATE might trade you something in exchange for them.
How to Catch an Anomaly
Anomalies are passive floating orbs of light that only appear between 9 PM and 6 AM. During these hours, they drift around the area and sometimes turn invisible temporarily. They emit some light but are more valuable as a resource for crafting and trading.
There are two main things to know before trying to catch them:
- You need Test Tubes to successfully capture anomalies.
- Security Bots patrol during the same nighttime hours and pose a threat.
Test Tubes are either found in large quantities at Bio Lab D in the Office Sector or can be crafted using one Glass Scrap and one Wood Plank at a crafting bench.
You can sometimes catch anomalies with your bare hands, but it’s very rare. Using Test Tubes increases your chances of success and guarantees you get one. To do this, put the Test Tube on your hotbar, then go out at night. Anomalies can appear in any part of GATE, but they are more common in the hallways on Level Two in the Office Sector, open areas like the Cafeteria in the Office Sector, and the Garage in Manufacturing West.
When you see one, walk up with the Test Tube equipped and press the interact button to capture it. Each anomaly takes one Test Tube, but the anomalies themselves stack in your inventory, so they don’t take up much space. Once captured, you can trade or craft with them. It’s best to store them in a powered refrigerator because they will decay over time like food.
What to Use Anomalies For
Anomalies can be used in various crafting recipes, but mainly they are traded with characters like The Blacksmith and Marion, or crafted into a few agriculture-related items:
- Anomalous Fertilizer
- Anomalous Compost
- Anomalous Plant Food
Marion, a trader unlocked after completing Flathill and placing a Symphonist Scarecrow near your base, will trade you three anomalies for one Partial Organ. These Organ parts are used in crafting the Maestro armor set.
The Blacksmith, available after reaching his location in Manufacturing West, will trade you one anomaly for one Rebar, giving you an alternative way to get Rebar while waiting for wooden crates to respawn.
For farming, you can craft these items at a crafting bench and apply them to any garden plot to enjoy various benefits:
- Anomalous Fertilizer: Boosts plant growth by 20% and reduces water use by 15%
- Anomalous Compost: Increases growth by 30%, reduces water usage by 20%
- Anomalous Plant Food: Speeds up plant growth to harvest readiness (requires Agriculture Level 15)
Anomalies are also essential for other recipes like the Transmogrifier, which changes your character’s appearance or gear, and the Pest Teleporter, which summons pests in exchange for Anteverse Wheat.
