Combat in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
The fighting system in Wuchang: Fallen Feathers depends a lot on what the player chooses to do. If you want to imitate characters like Sekiro or Ongbal, you can. However, the game doesn’t explain blocking and parrying right away, and these options aren’t available from the start for most weapons.
You will need to invest points into research to unlock these mechanics, which are also limited to specific weapons. Wuchang adds complexity and unique features that take time and practice to learn. You’ll need to read carefully and experiment to master these fighting options.
How To Block And Parry
Blocking is not immediately available from the beginning, and it’s only for certain weapons. Specifically, blocking is only for axes, longswords, and in one case, dual blades.
To unlock blocking or parrying, you need to invest in these skills in the Impetus Repository:
- Block — for axes, reduces damage taken significantly.
- Sword Counter — for longswords, blocks and deflects damage at the right moment.
Note: You can also unlock the ability to block with the Two Bandits dual blades, found in the Rebel Camp area, inside a chest behind a red-eyed Ming guard with a fire-shrapnel axe.
How To Use the Block Skill
Once you upgrade the block skill, it becomes a Discipline that you can add to your weapon. To do this:
- Pray at a shrine.
- Select Discipline in the bottom left corner.
- Choose the weapon you’re adding the Discipline to.
Use the right trigger (LT/L2/Shift+Right Mouse) to activate the Discipline, which only changes the Discipline skill. The basic Weapon Skill (LB/L1 or Shift+Left Mouse) remains linked to the weapon itself and can’t be changed.
Important: Since the Two Bandits dual blades are a weapon skill and not a Discipline, this skill cannot be changed and will always activate with the Weapon Skill trigger.
How To Upgrade Blocking And Parrying
Some skills can improve your blocking and parrying abilities. These include:
Name | Weapon Type | Effect |
---|---|---|
Block Variant | Axes | Greatly reduces damage when blocking. |
Steel Edge | Dual Blades | Using the Twin-Bandits’ block skill makes enemies Vulnerable. |
Sword Counter – Variant I | Longsword | Blocking causes enemy Vulnerability. |
Sword Counter – Variant II | Longsword | Parrying can lead to a counter-attack. |
Tip: Using the Two Bandits dual blades, you can unlock Block by searching behind a fire-shrapnel axe in the Rebel Camp area, inside a chest guarded by a Ming guard.
Using the Block Skill
When you have the block skill equipped:
- You can hold down the block key for as long as you have stamina, blocking every incoming attack.
- Parrying is performed by pressing the block key exactly when you see an attack coming.
How To Improve Blocking and Parrying
Some skills can enhance your blocking and parrying, making them more effective:
Name | Weapon Type | Effect |
---|---|---|
Block Variant | Axes | Uses less stamina when blocking. |
Steel Edge | Dual Blades | Using the Twin-Bandits’ block skill inflicts Vulnerability on enemies. |
Sword Counter – Variant I | Longsword | Blocking inflicts Vulnerability. |
Sword Counter – Variant II | Longsword | Parrying can be followed by a counterattack. |
Steel Resolve | Skyborn Might | Deflecting builds up Skyborn Might. |
What Is Clashing?
Clashing is a mechanic that combines blocking with precise timing for parrying. Instead of being a skill you activate, you perform a Clash by attacking at the same time as an enemy.
When you and an enemy hit simultaneously, most of the damage can be canceled or greatly reduced. Clashing is available for all types of weapons, but each weapon category has its own specific skills that unlock this ability.
Skills that enable Clashing include:
Name | Weapon Type | Effect |
---|---|---|
Axe & Hook | Axes | Charged attacks gain Clash. |
Chop & Weave | Axes | Most attacks gain Clash. |
Blade Dance – Variant I | Dual Blades | Blade Dance gains Clash to negate damage. |
Blademaster | Dual Blades | Enables Clashing during the skill; recovers some health when successful. |
Deadly Shadow | Dual Blades | Dash attacks can Clash, gaining Skyborn Might each time. |
Feather Chaser | Dual Blades | Most attacks can Clash. |
Leaf-Slasher | Dual Blades | Fourth to Sixth Light Combo attacks can Clash and grant Skyborn Might. |
Sudden Strike – Variant I | Dual Blades | Gains Clash and Skyborn Might on success. |
Wave Breaker | Dual Blades | Heavy and charged attacks gain Clash and Skyborn Might. |
Whirling Flurry – Variant I | Dual Blades | Has Clash; grants Skyborn Might. |
Spear Flurry | Spears | Can gain Clash with certain skills. |
Swift Lunge – Variant II | One-Handed Swords | Adds a second Clash-capable attack. |
Sword Savant | Longsword | Third attack of a Light Combo gains Clash. |
