The fifth chapter of Reanimal starts suddenly, without much fanfare, with you seamlessly entering the next area on your frightening journey through darkness: a creepy, ruined town controlled by a large, hairy spider monster.
This is where Mother, the next boss you’ll face, appears. The chapter is focused on chasing her and the Spider Kids through the shadows to make your way back to the surface and move on to the next part of this terrifying indie horror game from Little Nightmares developers Tarsier Studios.
You’ll wake up strapped to the lowered device your friend had been on, hanging above the ground. Wiggle around until the crane lowers you enough to hop off. Although you’re freed from the device, you’ll notice the orphans are still tied together, limiting your movements for now since she moves noticeably slower than the male orphan.
Head forward between the cars and jump onto broken platforms near the school bus to cross a gap safely. You’ll reach the first of several streetlamp puzzles. These lamps only turn on when you interact with them, briefly lighting up the area to help you see where to go. From your position, you can spot the next streetlamp, giving you directions.
Interact with the first streetlamp to get started. Jump over a small gap to reach the next lamp, then kick it to light your path across a plank over a gap. Cross the plank to reach the next streetlamp, but be careful—interacting with this one causes the path ahead to nearly collapse, leaving only thin spindles spanning the gap.
How to cross the broken path:
Even though you’re tied together, only one orphan can walk a path at a time because both kids standing on the thin pavement will cause it to crumble. Send the boy orphan over to the right path, and the girl will naturally move to the left. Walk forward to a small gap, then carefully jump across it as the male orphan. The female orphan can’t jump here without risking collapse, so move the male orphan onto the jagged pavement extending left, which she can jump to.
While she runs around to the far side of the left path, gently pull her back toward the middle. Walk to the other side as the male orphan slowly makes his way, encouraging her to hop over the gap and reunite with you.
Meeting Mother:
On the other side of the gap, there’s a large hole in the wall. Run ahead, but don’t jump the gap. Instead, wait for your friend to push down a plank of wood to create a bridge so you and the girl orphan can cross together.
Follow the pig to the right, proceeding further down the hall to see what’s going on. Crouch and jump over debris as needed, then turn right to leave through the crack in the wall, past the pig standing in the rubble.
Tip: Interact with the pig to soothe it—you’ll get an achievement for showing kindness.
Escaping from Mother: Going Up
The pig was scared for a reason—Mother, the giant hairy spider monster, is waiting beyond the crack. She drops down, grabs your friend, and spawns several Spider Kids following you. Sprint across the bridge ahead—your friend can’t help you right now—and go through the opening on the other side.
Keep sprinting up the stairs to escape, as the Spider Kids and Mother are right behind. Don’t make sharp turns; instead, run in large circles up the stairs to save precious seconds because timing is critical. Crawl through the hall’s opening at the top of the stairs to end this chase.
Resting spots:
Afterward, you can take a quick break by sitting on the wooden chair against the support beam in the room’s middle, helping you locate another resting spot in Reanimal.
Climbing the stairs to the next area:
Venture forward into the room, climbing over debris as needed to reach the door at the far side, which is currently locked. Push your way inside, where you’ll find a large staircase to climb. Use the female orphan to help pass any obstacles, like cabinets or rubble.
Hidden poster tip: If you go through the door on the left before climbing the large cabinet, you’ll find one of the hidden posters in Reanimal. Collecting all 20 unlocks special concept art in the main menu.
Climb the stairs and exit through the door at the top, stepping outside onto a makeshift wooden platform along the building’s façade.
Tip: The wooden chair just before the first jump out of the building is a resting place that unlocks the “Take a Load Off” trophy.
Re-entering the building:
Hop across the gap, follow the ledges to the bottom of the roof, and re-enter through a window pried open with your crowbar. Inside, you’ll see many petrified children. One of them, halfway down the room on the right, has the key needed to unlock the hatch in the floor at the back, which will allow you to progress after retrieving it from the body.
Running from Mother outside:
This hatch drops you onto a pile of crates and debris, where Mother is waiting for you. To escape, wait until she’s looking the other way, then carefully move to the next crates, crouching to hide and make less noise, and cross the room without being seen.
Escaping the final chase:
This time, there’s no safe way back—your only option is to dash for the door from your last hiding spot while Mother looks away, giving you a head start. Sprint across the broken roof, jumping over gaps and rusted pipes to reach the next checkpoint.
Work quickly with the girl orphan to push down a rusted pipe and create a crossing. Dash across, navigating gaps and taking sharp turns to maximize your speed. Once on solid ground, follow the platform back down toward the camera view.
Jump over the beam across the path, run on the cabinet to cross rubble, and carefully navigate the wooden beams to the other side. Squeeze through the hole in the wall at the end to reach the next checkpoint—the boss fight area.
Mother boss fight guide:
Mother will jump out from the wall behind you, ready to attack. She spawns a bunch of Spider Kids who scatter into the rafters, but you can strike some with your crowbar before they reach her.
You can’t damage Mother with the crowbar yet; instead, wait for the Spider Kids to throw spears at you, then dodge sideways, as the spears can’t change direction in mid-air and will stick into the ground. Use these spears to fight back by tossing them at Mother, which will unlock an achievement if you manage to kill ten of the Spider Kids this way before defeating Mother.
Mother will burst through the walls twice during this fight—once where you entered the room and again on the left side—trying to grab the orphans. Being caught isn’t an instant death if the female orphan has a spear. She can throw it at Mother, causing her to drop you, allowing the fight to continue. But if she doesn’t have a spear, you’ll die and have to restart.
While battling her, avoid getting grabbed, keep throwing spears into her, and dodge her attacks. After enough hits, Mother will retreat into a hole, prompting you to follow her into a tunnel. Inside, you’ll see her nearly defeated. Walk into her mouth, where the camera shifts, and use your crowbar to damage her from the inside.
Once she’s defeated, you’ll be spit back out with your friend, ending chapter five of Reanimal.
