Boss fights are a key part of every Silent Hill game, even when the combat mechanics weren’t always perfect for these battles. What truly made these bosses memorable was their visual design and psychological effects, and Silent Hill f continues that tradition. This time, the bosses aren’t just symbols of Hinako’s fears — they also represent elements of Japanese culture as a whole.
Growing up in a Japan where traditional patriarchy still heavily influences society despite progress, Ebisgaoka’s isolated religious beliefs symbolize the struggles Hinako faces. She confronts these beliefs directly in the form of two boss characters, Kyubi and Shichibi.
### When Do You Encounter Shichibi and Kyubi?
Shichibi and Kyubi are essentially the same boss, just appearing in different contexts. Shichibi is faced in the “Fox Wets Its Tail” ending, while Kyubi appears alongside Tsukumogami in the “Ebisugaoka In Silence” ending.
They differ slightly in appearance and color, but once you’ve fought one, the other should feel familiar. The main difference depends on which Hinako you’re battling with: Shichibi fights with the real-world Hinako, and Kyubi with her Otherworld form.
### How to Beat Shichibi
Shichibi is fought at the end of the Fox Wets Its Tail ending. After Fox Mask is defeated by Shu, he reveals his true form while under Inari’s influence. He grows multiple tails before turning into Shichibi, dragging Hinako into a new arena for battle. If he can’t claim her, he’s determined that no one else will.
Every time you damage Shichibi enough, Fox Mask appears instead. Fox Mask will summon weaker enemies to defend him, and you can attack Fox Mask while he’s weakened — defeating him will remove the summoned enemies and restore his Shichibi form.
If you manage to eliminate all the summons first, you’ll unlock the Fox Tamer achievement or trophy. Shichibi doesn’t go through distinct phases but changes his move set slightly each time he reverts to his Fox Form after taking damage. Usually, he’s pretty passive — lunging at you and slamming his tail — but the biggest challenge is keeping up as he runs around the arena.
A tip: Light weapons like the sickle or kitchen knife won’t work well because Shichibi is too tall to hit with them. Instead, use the Sacred Sword, which deals more damage and allows access to more powerful abilities like mid-attack counters, especially since it remains unpurified for this ending.
### How to Beat Kyubi
Kyubi, unlike Shichibi, is fought as the Overworld Hinako. Unlike Shichibi, he doesn’t enter a weakened state and is generally more aggressive. Enemy summons happen throughout the fight, and Kyubi uses a variety of attacks, including dashing, claw assaults, and ground beams. He also summons enemies, making the fight more chaotic. Prioritizing and defeating the summoned enemies quickly is crucial to refill your Kudzu Seal and avoid getting overwhelmed.
Remember, activating the Kudzu Seal is best saved for when Kyubi’s fight starts with Overworld Hinako. If you use it after the battle shifts to Real World Hinako fighting Tsukumogami, the effect will be canceled without refunding part of your seal. Focus your attacks on Kyubi himself by staying aggressive, and he should fall relatively fast.
