Morbid Metal is a roguelike hack-and-slash game that, during its early access release, features two different biomes. Each biome has its own unique hallways filled with waves of enemies and chests offering rewards. But the toughest part is the boss fights lurking at the end of each corridor. These battles are designed to push your skills to the limit.
The first boss you’ll face is Saru, located in the initial biome called Sublime Garden. Saru is a giant machine resembling a cyborg ape and packs a punch. Here are some helpful tips to beat Saru and come out victorious.
How to Defeat Saru
First Phase
In the start of the fight, Saru will leap at you and slam the ground with its fists. Make sure to dodge or run away when this happens. After dodging, you’ll have a brief chance to attack.
Saru can then perform a quick two-hit combo by swinging its fists in front of itself. Again, wait for the right moment, then attack. Focus your attacks on its back to avoid getting hit back, as this gives you an advantage.
During this phase, Saru’s body will glow red. Just before it strikes the ground with both fists, it creates a shockwave that moves around the arena. You can jump over this wave. For a smarter move, start attacking Saru’s back while in midair as it glows red—since the fists’ attack won’t reach you if you’re airborne.
Sometimes, Saru will jump away and repeat its shockwave attack twice in quick succession, so timing your jumps correctly is key to avoid damage.
Pro tip: Before starting the fight, fill your Protocol Gauge and prepare your Super Skill. This way, you can hit Saru hard early on.
Second Phase
Once Saru’s health drops to zero, it jumps to a higher platform, signaling the start of the second phase. From up there, Saru will begin shooting fists at you one at a time, repeating this attack four times.
To dodge these projectile fists, run to the side of the arena and press dodge just before impact. You’ll notice a red circle on the ground showing where the fist will land. After the fourth shot, Saru will jump back down to where you are.
When Saru screams and hits its chest, the lock-on will disappear, making it harder to control your camera. Count three seconds after the scream, then quickly dodge to one side to avoid Saru’s next attack.
While Saru is airborne, keep attacking its chest to finish it off. Watch out for the red glow in its chest—if you see it charging its arm with electricity, hit Saru and then quickly run away. Dogging the charging arm causes Saru to drop a device on the ground that, if passed over, will activate and release shockwaves you can jump over.
During this phase, Saru will also shoot lasers from its chest—be careful not to jump when they appear, as they are emitted from the glowing red chest. Stay grounded and attack when safe.
Third Phase
After Saru is defeated in the second phase, it will land hard, causing three consecutive shockwaves. Jump over these waves and attack during the air time.
Saru will resume its basic attack pattern, combining it with ground slams and shockwaves. Be alert for a new move: Saru charges its body, releasing three laser beams from its chest. When you see this, attack Saru and then run away, as it will drop a device that activates shockwaves when passed over.
In this final phase, Saru will start by firing multiple fists in front of it. Dodge sideways to stay safe. It will also perform the previous combo attacks, now mixed with ground charges and shockwaves. When Saru charges its body, it releases three laser beams. Avoid jumping when they come, and stay on the ground to attack safely.
Rewards for Beating Saru
Defeating Saru unlocks the second biome called Steel Sanctuary, where a new playable character is waiting. Additionally, you’ll earn a Soul Core, useful for progressing further in the game.
