If you’re playing Moonlighter 2: The Endless Vault during its Early Access stage, Prince Monte is the last boss you’ll face. Is he the hardest one? That’s up to you to decide, but one thing’s certain: we need to defeat him to earn his special reward.
Monte can fly away on his stingray, making him tricky to catch. He also has a unique mechanic where you must run to the top of the screen while dodging obstacles. To beat Monte, learn his moves and get used to his attack patterns.
### How to Defeat Monte
Monte is found at the end of your run in Harrowing Heights, the second area in Aeolia. He rides a flying stingray.
#### Monte’s First Phase
One of his first attacks is creating large straight lines where weapons fall from the sky. These are long, but you can roll sideways to dodge them. If you roll close to Monte, you can hit him a couple of times before he launches the next wave. He repeats this four times.
Next, Monte takes to the sky on his stingray and charges into a circle on the ground. During this, avoid melee weapons and focus on shooting him with your gun if you have ammo. Monte usually returns to the center of the arena after each big move, so stay close there — he will give you chances to land free hits.
After some time, Monte will leap into the air with his weapon charged with lightning. You can hit him a few times, but it’s best to run away first to learn his timing.
He might also set off a series of explosions marked with pink on the ground. It’s better to stay close and jump into the first explosion wave to land hits while he’s not moving. This attack can happen three times in a row, so getting the timing down allows for good damage.
When Monte’s health drops to about 30%, he moves to a higher platform. Projectiles fall from the sky, and you must dodge these while moving through gaps between walls. Interact with a rope to reach him, as he’s guarded by a shield. You’ll need to throw a destroyed projectile at him three times to bring him back down.
#### Monte’s Second Phase
In this phase, Monte adds new attacks. Chains will spawn across the arena, and he will pass through them. While you can hit him if timed right, it’s better to focus on the new enemies that spawn to charge your ammo.
Monte combines previous attacks: he will perform melee strikes while weapons fall from the sky and do flying charges with explosions. These explosion attacks now spread from the top to the bottom of the screen, instead of from the side.
You don’t need to hit him during these combination attacks, but if you want to, wait for a safe moment when projectiles are far away, dodge his melee attack, and strike.
During the chasing part, some flying enemies will appear while you’re on the three-platform section. Simply shoot them or let their explosions happen far away, then keep throwing purple balls with your backpack.
#### Monte’s Third Phase
In the final phase, Monte increases the number of projectiles and explosions. Air charges will have objects falling from above, and chain attacks will leave dangerous trails. His weapon will glow with more lightning, and the attack patterns become more intense — multiple waves of falling weapons and explosions will happen, moving from top to bottom.
It’s best to wait for the wave of explosions around him, as this move is predictable and gives free hits. Use your gun frequently to manage the added chaos.
### Rewards for Beating Monte
Upon defeating Monte, you’ll get two loot chests and The King’s Right Mask, a material needed to finish Souls Forever Lost 2 and craft the Ray Axe.
