This is one of the toughest bosses I’ve encountered in Crimson Desert so far. Lucian Bastier shows up at the end of act eight, and you have to fight him as Damiane. If, like me, you ignored most of the other characters and focused only on leveling Kliff and his skills, this fight can feel overwhelming. I was thrown into the battle with beginner gear and little understanding of how Damiane works.
But with some persistence, better prep, and practice, I managed to beat Lucian Bastier. Here’s how I pulled it off.
### Preparation for Lucian Bastier
At the end of act eight, Kliff gets injured, so Damiane has to take over and defeat Lucian Bastier. Up until this point, I hadn’t used Damiane at all. Not for any special reason, I just concentrated on Kliff. Her gear by default is only tier three, which isn’t enough at this stage of the game.
Most quests are unlocked by playing as Kliff, so you can’t actually unlock other Abyss Artifacts to upgrade Damiane’s gear easily. You can either reset your skills to get your Artifacts back and respec her for this fight or upgrade her equipment with what you can. I chose to upgrade where possible, equip some jewelry—like earrings, rings, or a necklace—which Damiane was missing initially—and learn how her skills work.
Here’s the gear I used:
– Flower Petal Earring (from a lockbox in Mudridge Cabin near Porrorin Forest)
– Tier three Ancient Earring (from strongboxes in Demeniss manor houses)
– Tier three Spencer Pistol
– Tier three Demeniss Elite Leather Armor
– Tier four Demenissian Leather Cloak
– Tier four White Wind Rapier
– Tier four Demenissian Leather Gloves
– Tier four Demenissian Leather Boots
– Tier four Demeissian Gold-Decorated Shield
I upgraded some gear pieces—like the rapier, gloves, boots, shield, and cloak—using regular materials. Beyond that, further upgrades needed Artifacts and Bloodstones, which I didn’t have enough of. I also visited the Witch to add slots to my gear, installing three Abyss cores into the sword: Resource Recovery on Kill, Attack 2, and Wind Slash. I’d have preferred to use cores from Kliff’s gear, but he was unavailable. I also added +1 Health, +1 Stamina, and Damage Reduction 2.0 to my chest piece.
Damiane comes with default skills straight out of the box. I didn’t change these; I just learned to work with what she had. I’ll discuss some strategies using her skills later.
### Food Preparation
Having plenty of food helps a lot in tough fights. I kept a large stockpile—bought Chewy Rice Cakes and Meat Porridge daily from Ronnie at Greymane Camp and crafted Hearty Meat Skewers with ingredients I gathered while exploring, like deer meat and vegetables.
I also kept about 30 other food items, gathered from looted manor houses and defeated enemies. Every piece counts when taking on Lucian Bastier.
### Boss Mechanics and Fight Strategy
The Lucian Bastier battle has two phases. The first is relatively calm once you learn his attack patterns and effectively use Damiane’s abilities.
#### First Phase
This phase isn’t straightforward, but a key tactic that helped me was combining Blinding Flash with Damiane’s Right Trigger Ability, Smiting Bolt. I used these to chip away at Lucian while dodging his attacks. Damiane is faster than Kliff, which is a plus; she can dodge repeatedly without draining all her stamina.
Timing your Blinding Flash to stun Lucian as he prepares a charge or attack is crucial. Watch for telltale signs—like when he lifts his sword or adopts an attacking stance—and activate Blinding Flash quickly. It’s very fast, so with practice, you’ll catch him out.
After stunning him, I used Damiane’s Smiting Bolt and Forward Lunge to deal a lot of damage. Be patient with your attacks—waiting for the right moment instead of rushing in—because Lucian’s speed means rushing can get you hurt.
#### Second Phase: Awakened Lucian Bastier
This phase is brutal. Bastier attacks at lightning speed and with aggressive ferocity. It sometimes feels impossible to block or counter. My best advice is to bring a lot of food—more than you think you’ll need—and master timing your Blinding Flash with Smiting Bolt.
It’s best to stay as far away from him as possible during this phase. Don’t attempt to use Damiane’s pistol; he dodges every bullet. When his spectral allies appear and attack, focus on dodging repeatedly. You can’t hit him when these copies are active, so just keep dodging and wait until they’re defeated.
Once the spectral helpers are gone, time your Blinding Flash carefully, then rush in with basic attacks and combos. Hit him with Smiting Bolt and repeat the process. It takes patience and resourcefulness—burning through your food supplies but eventually winning out.
### Final Tips
– Spend time learning his attack cues to better time your stuns.
– Use Damiane’s fast dodge ability to avoid damage, especially in the second phase.
– Keep your inventory stocked with food for health regeneration.
– Focus on timing key skills like Blinding Flash to maximize their stun potential.
– Avoid close combat during the second phase; remain at a distance when possible.
