The world of Hollow Knight: Silksong features many bosses, some appearing multiple times. While defeating some of these bosses is necessary to finish the game, others are only visible on optional routes that players may never explore.
One such optional boss is the Father Of The Flame, which can only be encountered in the Wisp Thicket biome. This fight is relatively simple, but it can be quite challenging if you’re not familiar with your abilities.
Where to Find Father Of The Flame
To face Father Of The Flame, you need to unlock the Wisp Thicket biome, accessible from the upper left side of Greymoor. It’s recommended to have the Faydown Cloak ability before visiting, as it makes movement and the fight much easier.
Once in Wisp Thicket, head right to find a bench, then move all the way to the left. There, you’ll find a small section shaded similarly to Bellhart. This is where the boss fight occurs. When you step into the room, the entrance behind you will lock, forcing you into the battle.
How to Beat Father Of The Flame
Compared to other bosses, this fight is straightforward since it primarily involves one or two attacks depending on the phase. In the first phase, the boss summons flames that circle around briefly before locking onto your position and rushing toward you, dealing damage.
During this phase, four flame parts will appear on the boss’s hands. You must destroy all four to progress to the next phase. The flames move fast, especially when you’re airborne, making avoidance challenging.
This is where the Faydown Cloak is very helpful because it allows you to jump once more after each attack. Using downward strikes on the red mushrooms located in the battlefield is effective. It’s best to position yourself above each flame before striking, as attacking from above makes it easier to hit them accurately. Removing the higher flames also causes the dangling mushrooms on those branches to disappear.
Getting hit by a flame instantly doubles the damage you take. Additionally, hitting the boss doesn’t restore your Silk, so healing is limited. You can dodge the flames based on their positioning:
- When a flame prepares to strike above your position (it changes shape from a butterfly to a proper flame), use the Faydown Cloak to jump away as it approaches.
- If a flame is below you, aim down and dash downward to dodge it effectively.
A useful tool here is the Magma Bell, which can be purchased from the vendor in Deep Docks; it can help in controlling flames.
Phase Two and Beyond
After destroying the four branch flames, the boss’s core becomes vulnerable, allowing you to deal damage. However, the boss will then unleash a new attack, igniting for a moment before releasing flames in all directions rapidly.
During this attack, it’s best to stay on the ground, avoid corners, and stay near the center to dodge the flames using your abilities. When the attack ends, hop onto the mushrooms and perform downward strikes on the core while avoiding flameballs.
Once defeated, the Father Of The Flame rewards you with the Wispfire Lantern tool. After victory, all red-hooded enemies in Wisp Thicket explode if you get close, and they will not reappear even if you rest at a bench, though the flame vessels will remain.
