The Last Caretaker offers a weapon system where you select your weapon type and then personalize it to suit your playstyle. Options include rifles, sidearms, and grenades, with various add-ons and ammunition types to customize their effectiveness.

This guide covers all weapon options, how to swap out add-ons and ammo, and what you’ll need as you advance through the game to rescue humanity. Facing different enemies, having the right gear makes progress much smoother.

Note: The game is currently in Early Access, so details may change over time.

All Weapon Types

There are three main weapon categories: rifles, sidearms, and grenades. You’ll also find three ammunition types: electric, petrol, and bullets. Grenades come in three variants: electric, flame, and standard.

  • Electric and petrol weapons can be recharged using utility backpacks.
  • Bullet weapons require you to craft and carry specific ammo.

Below are all available weapons, their unlock requirements, and classifications.

Name Unlock Criteria Type Ammo Type
Electric Pistol Tier 3, 1 Skill Point Sidearm Electric-charged
Bolt Pistol Tier 5, 2 Skill Points Sidearm Uses bullets
Flamer Pistol Tier 7, 2 Skill Points Sidearm Petrol-fueled
Electric Rifle Tier 14, 3 Skill Points Rifle Electric-charged
Bolt Rifle Tier 11, 3 Skill Points Rifle Uses bullets
Flame Thrower Tier 10, 3 Skill Points Rifle Petrol-fueled
Bolt Sniper Tier 17, 3 Skill Points Rifle Uses bullets

Grenades include small, electric, and flame variants, unlocking between tiers 8 and 19. Complete crafting recipes and unlock details are available in the full crafting guide.

Note: The Bolt Sniper functions like a rifle but with enhanced range.

Equipping Weapons

Once crafted, add weapons to your inventory for quick access:

  • Right-click the weapon in your inventory and select “Add To Holster.”
  • Or click on the holster slot at the bottom and pick a weapon from the options.

Rifles appear as “Holster (1),” pistols as “Holster (2),” and you can also assign a grenade to slot three. The fourth slot is for consumables like batteries.

To switch weapons or batteries, use keys 1-4. Action bar items are mapped to keys 5-8, which you can customize to include your flashlight, repair tool, dismantle tool, and fuel backpacks.

Choosing the Best Weapon

Your initial weapons will likely be electrical due to ease of use and refueling. As you progress, you’ll add flamethrowers for organic enemies and petrol weapons for versatility.

Later in the game, switching to bolt firearms provides more flexibility because they use ammo that can be stockpiled, making long hunts easier. Resource availability and enemy type influence your choice.

We’ll explore each weapon’s strengths and how to customize them with different ammo and upgrades.

Electric Weapons

  • Electric Pistol: Unlocked at Tier 5 with 2 Skill Points. Great for close-range combat against robots and non-slime enemies. It doesn’t need ammo—just charge it at an electric port.
  • Electric Rifle: Unlocks at Tier 14 for 3 Skill Points. Offers long-range fire with a charged shot mechanic, allowing more damage with longer hold.

Key advantage: No ammo needed; just plug into power sources.

Petrol-Fueled Weapons

  • Flamer Pistol: Accessible at level 7 with 2 Skill Points. Effective against slimes due to fire damage, but less so against robots. Requires fuel.
  • Flame Thrower (Rifle): Unlocks at level 10 for 3 Skill Points. Longer range and longer-lasting fuel capacity.

Fueling: Use resource backpacks to recharge or refuel weapons. Only one backpack can be equipped at a time, so choose wisely based on your combat needs.

Refilling Electric and Petrol Weapons

To keep fuel or electricity topped up:

  • Craft and equip resource backpacks, which have different capacities:

    • Oni Sparkcell (Tier 5, small, electricity)
    • Oni Voltplus (Tier 11, medium, electricity)
    • Oni Megacell (Tier 15, large, electricity)
    • Oni Fuellite (Tier 7, small, petrol)
    • Oni Petroflow (Tier 10, medium, petrol)
    • Oni Petromax (Tier 15, large, petrol)
  • Connect backpacks to weapons by pressing E after equipping them. You can only carry one backpack at a time, so must switch if needed.

Tip: Electric backpacks also charge your internal battery, which is useful for staying powered up.

Bolt Weapons

  • Require crafting and carrying bullets. They are versatile, allowing ammo type swaps for adapting to enemies.

  • Bolt Pistol: Unlocks at Tier 5 for 2 Skill Points.

  • Bolt Rifle: Unlocks at Tier 11 for 2 Skill Points.

  • Bolt Sniper: Unlocks at Tier 17 for 3 Skill Points. Ideal for long-range targeting, especially in water combat.

Ammo types for bolts include:

Ammo Unlock Criteria Effect
Pistol Flex With weapon Standard bullets
Pistol Shard Tier 8, 1 Skill Point Soft targets, minor area damage
Rifle Slam With weapon High impact rounds
Rifle Trace Tier 15, 2 Skill Points Fire damage, tracer rounds
Rifle Tri Tier 18, 1 Skill Point Short-circuit rounds for electrical targets
30 Round Rifle Mag With weapon Standard magazine
Sniper Lux With weapon Precise long-range rounds
Sniper Rod Tier 15, 1 Skill Point Long-range underwater capabilities

To switch ammo, press F while holding the weapon and select the ammo type.

Weapon Enhancements

Enhance your weapons via inspection:

  • Equip the weapon.
  • Press G to open the inspection menu.
  • Click the area to upgrade.
  • Press E to select options.
  • Choose and confirm the desired upgrade.
  • Press Q to exit.

All enhancements and ammo types are accessible if you have them in your inventory. Examples include:

Name Unlock Level Use
Breacher Barrel Tier 9, 1 Skill Point Short-range shotgun effect
Laser Sight Tier 9, 1 Skill Point Adds laser aiming assist
Suppressor Barrel Tier 9, 1 Skill Point Focuses shot trajectory
Red Dot Sight Tier 10, 1 Skill Point Targets at short range
Optical Sight Tier 16, 1 Skill Point Physical sight overlay
Extender Barrel Tier 17, 1 Skill Point Extends range

Guns are designed for extensive modification, so expect planned future updates to add more options.

This overview provides a foundation for customizing and using your weapons effectively, based on the resources you gather and enemies you encounter.
